Random health insurance question with new job
Dh is starting a new job with a different company in a month. They offer health insurance which we will buy in to.
It's been YEARS since we've had employer offered health insurance so dumb question that I don't know the answer of -- will the new health insurance start on day 1 of employment or will there be a waiting period? I'm trying to decide when to drop our existing plan. He'll ask the official HR but his appt with them is not for another week and I'm just curious what the general experience with this is.

Re: Random health insurance question with new job
It varies by employer - he'll need to ask directly. We've had it start on day 1 and also after a few weeks.

Re: Random health insurance question with new job
I’ve also had after 90 days. in General if I starts on day 1, I believe the current law states you have 30 days to sign up. If you miss the deadline, Then You would have to wait for the plans annual open enrollment

Re: Random health insurance question with new job
My mom had 30 days to sign up and was so overwhelmed at work she didn't! Which resulted in having to wait 6 months! It really varies.

Re: Random health insurance question with new job
My dh just started a new job and has to work 60 days to get insurance. Our last employer it was 30 days. Also something to consider- there will probably be open enrollment for 2019 soon. So consider skipping dental and vision coverage for the rest of 2018 if you’re not planning on using it.

Re: Random health insurance question with new job
I would say most places are 1st of the month after 30 days of employment.

Re: Random health insurance question with new job
IME, big corporations have been immediate, family owned businesses have a waiting period.
