Those who are grain free ? Favorite flour to bake with ?
Do you like Flax meal, coconut flour, almond flour better?
which is the most cost effective? What is your fav place to buy your fav grain-free flour of the above? My dh is low carb and I am grain free for other reasons, so I need a good baking alternative. I LOVE flax seed muffins in the microwave, I make those for he and I often, but I've never tried almond or coconut flour and thought I'd ask on here about how these all compare taste and price-wise. Thanks! |

Re: Those who are grain free ? Favorite flour to bake with ?
coconut flour is much cheaper overall, because you use alot less of it. For example, a batch of muffins might call for 2.5 cups of almond flour, which will run you at least $5, while the coconut flour recipe would only call for maybe 1/4-1/2 a cup, which would be less than 50 cents. Coconut flour recipes are usually egg based, so factor your egg cost into it. Almond flour recipes can come out much more like a traditional baked goods, coconut flour ones usually seem pretty different. They can still be pretty tasty, but definitely different. My DH calls anything I make with coconut flour 'eggy'.

Oh! Got it! OK, I didn't know glad could be a stand alone flour.
Coconut flour is probably your best low carb option. It's better blended with tapioca though. Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk |

Re: Those who are grain free ? Favorite flour to bake with ?
I love the using almond flour the most, but like it was already mentioned it is more expensive because you use a lot. Coconut flour is really not my favorite, just because of the amount of eggs. I love eggs, but not eggy baked goods. And it ends up being expensive for us anyways because we buy eggs... if we had laying hens that would be different.
I've never cooked solely with flaxmeal... only added small amounts of it! Could you share your flaxseed muffin recipe?

I'm not grain-free, but I love to cook with almond meal. I usually use half grain flour and half almond meal, and I really like it a lot. I buy it at Trader Joe's.

I like different ones for different things. Lol
I like bean flours for things like gravies. I like almond meal/flour as coatings on meats and in many, many applications. I like coconut in things that are more "crumble" like donuts, muffins, cakes, "corn" bread, etc. I like coconut in the grain free pizza crust. I like almond and coconut blended in some things...like cereal.

Re: Those who are grain free ? Favorite flour to bake with ?
I have actually been using millet flour recently. I have only made pancakes with it so far but I have been really happy with how they turn out. And it is really cheap compared to most of the other gluten free flours- like about the same price as rice flour which I have never really liked. I have used coconut flour for cookies and cakes and they have turned out pretty good. Have to adjust a little with the amount of liquid I have found because it soaks it right up.
Oh and I wanted to add that I like buckwheat flour too and again it is pretty cheap compared to other flours. I really like buckwheat pancakes but you can also mix with other flours to make other baked goods. I think it would be good alone in a more strongly flavored baked good like molasses cookies or something like that but have not tried it. Oh and I just realized that you said grain free vs gluten free but I think both millet and buckwheat are considered seeds?

Here is my flax seed muffin recipe. I want to adapt it to make more and be cooked in the oven.
