at home carpet cleaner
Can anyone recommend a carpet cleaner? I've got several high traffic areas that need some cleaning and I'd like to be able to do it myself regularly.

Re: at home carpet cleaner
We bought a full sized Bissell from Costco, and a Green Machine from Canadian Tire. Neither machine lasted very long. I'll buy another small portable cleaner eventually. I like being able to spot clean furniture. For the floors, I think it is better for me to rent or have someone come in to do the cleaning.

Re: at home carpet cleaner
We had one. I believe it was Bissell brand, but I can't remember. It was a really nice one.
If you get one, make sure to store in inside a heated area. Ours didn't last long and ended up leaking horribly, to the point where we just tossed it. I think that it was because we do not have a basement so stored in in the outside garage, and I'm assuming the water left in the hoses froze and broke something. We have had a few over our marriage and although all worked fantastically at first, none last long enough to justify the purchase. In hindsight, for us, I feel it's a much better solution for us to rent a carpet cleaner from the local grocery store when needed rather than investing in purchasing our own. I just wasn't impressed with the ones we purchased. And truthfully, even when owning, we didn't drag it out enough to really justify the short term rent vs. long term own cost as we thought it would. BUT we live in the US. And carpet cleaner rentals are fairly inexpensive here. Would totally change the dynamic if that factor were variable. Have you compared the cost of a rental vs. a purchase?

I had a Bissell and it didn't last very long, nor did it clean to my satisfaction.

Interesting that nothing seems to hold up well. I guess i can check and see how much rentals are....maybe that's the way to go!

Re: at home carpet cleaner
Heat makes stains stinkier and more permanent, so if you'd had any potty accidents where you plan to clean, spot clean first! I used a black light to locate urine stains. :shudder

Re: at home carpet cleaner
We have a Bissel. Some thing about pet pro or something. It works really well, when I use it. *shifty* it actually did an amazing job on the paint spill we had in the basement last year. (DS, 8 mo at the time, reached up and pulled the can off the table. We didn't know he was tall enough!) We still ended up getting a professional in, but the bulk of it was already cleaned up.
