Ceiling fan -- remote or manual control?
I need to purchase a new ceiling fan for our living room. It's where the wood stove is so good ventilation is key, thus the desire for a fan.
Anyway, I'm trying to decide if we want to go with a remote control or not. The ceilings are 9 foot, so a little above average, but not unreachable by any means. I love the idea of not having those ugly awful chains hanging down. And I love the idea of a remote. BUT I also envision it being misplaced at some point, and then what??? I'm remembering the times I want to turn on the tv and first have to search for the remote and envisioning the same fiasco with the fan. Tho we'd keep it up I think... Anyway, what are your thoughts? What do you have and are you happy with it or wish you went the other way (remote or manual)?

Re: Ceiling fan -- remote or manual control?
My friends just bought a house and their new vaulted ceiling living room had a lost remote. He had to change out the sensor thingy and get a new remote, but they mounted it to the wall. So it's practically just another light switch. Changing batteries in the remote will be difficult, but not as difficult as losing the remote entirely lol

Re: Ceiling fan -- remote or manual control?
Your post reminded me that we have a remote for our family room ceiling fan. I know where it is, we just don't use it.

Re: Ceiling fan -- remote or manual control?
We have a hunter brand fan in our master bedroom with a remote. It's mounted over the existing light switch and we store it there when not in use. If we lose the remote we can still manually work the lights with the switch.
Ours actually has the chains hanging down too. The battery in ours is easy to change but it uses a special lithium battery that we found at Target. We love our fan but sometimes it has a mind of its own and randomly turns on. Not the most fun at 3 am. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Re: Ceiling fan -- remote or manual control?
Is hardwiring with wall control an option?
We need to install 4 ceiling fans and our LR has 10 foot ceilings so we are going with a wall control. Bedrooms will have pull chains. We WILL lose remotes. |

Hardwiring with a wall control is the way to go, IMO.

Re: Ceiling fan -- remote or manual control?
We have a remote that quit working and we have yet to replace it. I recommend manual or at least have a manual option.

Re: Ceiling fan -- remote or manual control?
I had one with a remote and hated it. Would never buy one again. Not nearly as convenient as you would think (actually the opposite)

Re: Ceiling fan -- remote or manual control?
We have 2 with remotes and remote holders mounted to the wall. No chains. In living room and kitchen. Love. We are replacing with remote fans.
We have hardwired in 2 rooms. One with a chain for speed but on/off control on wall. It works. The other bedroom with a fan has hardwired for speed and on/off. As awesome as the remote. Maybe better. It has a slider next to the switch for the speed.

Re: Ceiling fan -- remote or manual control?
YES! I thought of that after I posted this! I have no idea how to go about this. I mean, it wouldn't be *me* doing it, but dh, but I am the chooser of the fan itself. So I see fans that are manual and fans that have remotes -- can both of these be hard wired to a wall mounted switch?

Re: Ceiling fan -- remote or manual control?
We turn it on/off manually. The last thing this family needs is another remote

Re: Ceiling fan -- remote or manual control?
I never even knew it was a thing to have options other than the pull chain!

Re: Ceiling fan -- remote or manual control?
Well, the fan is ordered. In fact it's scheduled to arrive today! I'm excited to see it installed.
I learned that hardwiring the fan individually from the light is an option but one that would have required some additional wiring and re-wiring so we eliminated that. I decided I disliked the look of the pull chains (even tho prior to this I had no idea there were any other options), so I went with one with a remote. It obviously will be hard wired to a single on/off switch, so that will be the primary use since i can't imagine doing too much changing with the fan. However, I am either going to install the remote itself to the wall to make it similar to a hard wire system OR I am going to have a designated spot for the remote somewhere where the children are clear that they are never to touch it. That's my best hopes of it actually being there when I need it. We'll see how this turns out.
