Allergy testing/ Headache helps
So how do you make allergy testing easier for a 6yo? I have no idea what is behind ds's headaches but something has to give here. C/T scan came back normal, ped says they have no idea but they could give him a prescription antihistamine that sometimes helps kids' migraines. He's been going to the chiropractor every week. I set up allergy testing for tomorrow morning. Yesterday he asked what was going to happen at the appt and probably stupid of me, but I explained the process of 'scratch testing' and he flipped out and has been begging me to cancel it since then. So, anybody know any good ways to distract him, make it easier? Please?

Re: Allergy testing
It was not nearly as bad as they made it sound. Ds did fine, didn't even hurt. But. There were no results other than a very small red bump by the wheat test. Not even enough to call it a reaction they said. So he's not allergic to anything. I have no idea where to go from here with his headaches.

I know it's been a couple years, but I'm wondering if you ever got down to this and did the Igg/Ige testing ? The skin prick test doesn't say a lot about how the gut is reacting. It says how the skin reacts. Is he still having migraines?? |

Re: Allergy testing/ Headache helps
My husband had a very small reaction to wheat and corn on the skin test, but within less than 5 minutes, he has horrible reactions and is in bed for a week or more due to muscle tremors and loss of control.
Yet, to the dr. it doesn't 'look' that bad on the skin prick. Also, if your child had a reaction to wheat, I KNOW it can cause debilitating migraine headaches. My youngest would have to sit in a dark room and could not play or eat or enjoy life for the first 12 yrs of life when the headaches came on. (I had a military dr. tell me that at 2 they do not have sinuses to be infected. After 2 weeks of round the clock care I insisted she have an xray............it was there..........she had them, and they were tilted backwards so they did not drain correctly and they were infected...........thus the headaches because the wheat caused the inflammation>) |

Re: Allergy testing/ Headache helps
The scratching isn't horrid for my DD but the reactions were. She had false negatives so they did an injection test and her arm got really swollen. The allergist checked w her and monitored her.
Our allergist doesn't jump into testing ASAP and believes that under a certain age they are iffy in regards to accuracy. We use essential oils, some natural remedies, nasal sprays (natural and prescriptuon) and antihistamines. I'm happy to share more info if needed. All 3 of my kids have varying degrees of allergies. My eldest is the worst, youngest second worse and my DS is the least... Even ds' are significant compared to dh and I!! Headaches are definitely an allergy symptoms for my kids

Re: Allergy testing/ Headache helps
In our recent experience, it isn't the test pokes that are all that bothersome... it is the itching when they begin to react to something. We were holding our 6 yo's hands so he wouldn't scratch, but at one point he tried to fling himself off the chair in an attempt to scratch his back against the seat of the chair (thankfully hubby had the reflexes to catch him ). The very second he heard the timer go off he was crying, "That's for me! It's over, get it off me! Where is she? She's supposed to get it off me. She promised." He had a lot of reactions though. But we knew it would be bad because of how awful his symptoms were going off the allergy meds in preparation for the testing. The doctor had planned to do some by bloodwork in addition to the scratch tests but put those off since he was so miserable.
The distractions that helped best were us reading to him and telling him jokes... until we just got so far into the itch(es) you can't scratch that he could think of nothing else. Before they do the test pokes they start by labelling the back with the letters/numbers they are running, our son found this highly ticklish and it took a little while because of all the breaks she was giving him to catch his breath from the laughing so he was good and relaxed and happy before she started. He was very anxious going into it, and afraid he would have a bunch of scabs and need a bandage the size of his whole back so he wouldn't get his clothes bloody, etc (no idea where any of that came from)... nothing we said calmed him but my ENT said that there might be a YouTube video of someone getting it done that might ease his fears. Would that maybe be something that your child would respond to? ETA: Ooops, I just now saw this is an old thread and already would have been dealt with by now. |
