Default older kids with cradle cap?

My 8yo has what looks like a gross case of cradle cap. We'd noticed some flakes before and he's been using Head and Shoulders (I know, ) but tonight after he got out of the shower, his hair looked GROSS. Covered in flakes. I thought maybe he just hadn't washed well, so I rewashed his hair...it didn't help at all. I looked more closely and saw that his scalp is a mess. It looks similar to cradle cap.

I went and found this old baby brush I remember using when he had cradle cap as an infant...brushed and rinsed and even used some baking soda...all I succeeded in doing was making him cry and the flakes just kept coming.

Any thoughts on what's causing it and how to get rid of it?

Could be psoriasis. I've had patches of that on my scalp. I was told to treat it with tar shampoo (smells nasty- I use that shampoo and then wash it with regular shampoo to cover the smell). I also got a prescription liquid to squirt on it.

I would definitely take him to the Ped and have it checked out. Older kids usually only get cradle cap if they're not at all washing/rinsing their hair in the bath/shower. I'd be concerned about an actual problem. Were the flakes skin-colored? Grey? Orange or yellow? Each of those mean different things to me.

The flakes were white. Maybe slightly yellowish. It's entirely possible he's not been washing/rinsing well--he has been doing everything all by himself for a while now. I'm confident he's *trying* to wash and rinse well, but definitely could be that he's not doing it properly.

We had something similar here recently. We finally decided that ds wasn't rinsing his hair very well (because it's more fun to have a fake mohawk) and it was drying out his scalp and leaving soap that then flaked. But yes, big white flakes.

My son is 10 and we've been battling it for years. We've tried natural and medicated shampoos and so far nothing has kept it away. We're seeing a dermatologist soon though bc maybe it's not cradle cap or maybe they'll have better treatment ideas

It's almost always IME fungal and treatment usually involves using antifungal shampoos. http://www.uptodate.com/contents/seb...ond-the-basics It wouldn't be a bad idea to limit sugar consumption and add a daily probiotic.

Sounds like either seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis to me.

Sounds like cradle cap. All my kids have it. DS2 the worst.

Confirm with the doc. But we use a Neutrogena shampoo that has helped a lot. It's called T Sal or something like that.

Could be ringworm? But that would be concentrated patches, not overall flakes.

I was going to mention this. And candida is a possibility. We added e.o.'s to shampoo that were antifungal (thieves and tea tree). I wish we had done oral antifungals right away because the shampoo fixed the hair but other symptoms were lurking.

For us in addition to no sugar, probiotics and antifungals, we needed digestive enzymes too repair the tummy damage.

My baby never out grew her cradle cap. I only recently realized it was probably something else, since it wasn't responding well to cradle cap treatment. Its getting better with apple cider vinegar treatments, but it is a long slow process (probably because I am not applying it as often as I should.)

Dd has had cradle cap forever. We've tried everything. It just started clearing up on it's own about 6 months ago, slowly but surely. It is much better than it has been now, about 3/4 gone.

And another opinion to add to the mix....

Have you considered allergies? Chickadee gets cradle cap when we have an accidental dairy ingestion
