Default Magnesium causing Yeast infections

My cousin asked me yesterday about her magnesium and the fact that it was seemingly causing her to develop a yeast infection every time she took it.

Everything I have read states that mag is supposed to help candida issues.

Anyone heard or experienced this?

Wow. Interesting. Sometimes a yeast treatment can cause a "herxheimer reaction" because of the release of toxins from all the dying yeast. I don't think that can cause a yeast infection though but it's something she could look into.

There are many different forms of magnesium. Which one is she taking? And what fillers does it have? I probably won't have an answer beyond that, but it's something to check into.

Did anything in particular prompt her to take magnesium? Could it be that and not the mag?

Ionic Mag is what it's called. It's mag chloride, citrate, and ascorbate, and potassium sorbate.

As for why. ... mostly to help her sleep I think. She's also vegan so I wonder if there is something else going on.

So that's 2 forms of magnesium and 2 preservatives.

Mag citrate is a form that is not recommended on my magnesium group. (As in, it's recommended *not* to take that form.)

So she may want to switch up the form that she is taking. Magnesium glycinate is supposed to be very good for helping sleep, but I've also heard some people have the opposite effect and get wired. Still, it's worth trying.

My kinesiologist had me on a Biotics brand C/Cal/Mag which has magnesium gluconate instead of citrate and seemed to work well for me - might be worth a look? I also take Buffered vit C powder (Thorne research) that has Magnesium Ascorbate which might be worth a look too, particularly for the immune boosting. Both powders have vit C (obviously in the latter as it is mainly a high-dose C) and calcium; mag should always be taken with calcium.

That said, I know very little about the many different kinds of magnesium and she'd do well to get some advice from someone in the know.

I use an angstrom magnesium (this is a measurement not a brand) and find I can take as much as I need without digestive issues, unlike other forms.

We had another thread somewhere about the possible dangers of calcium supplementation. I get enough in my diet so I don't take calcium and I don't think it's necessary.

Citrate like Natural Calm is ok IMO as long as you can handle the aftermath some people experience.

I take Pure Encapsulations brand Mag Glycinate. I'm also experimenting with Mag water (google for recipe) and Magnesium Malate. That one is supposed to be energizing, so I'm taking that one in the morning. I just started 3 days ago, so nothing to report.

There is lots of really great magnesium information on the FB group called Magnesium Advocacy Group. That's where I'm doing my learning from.

They also have an adrenal cocktail recipe that I'm supposed to be taking, so I can get the co-factors, but I haven't started that yet either.

I have used Cili Minerals brand of angstrom minerals before. I like them.

I just started taking magnesium malate because it's supposed to be energizing. It's only been a week.

So I looked up the Mag group... Are there more than one with that title? What I found hasn't been posted on since like 2013... and it says community but there is no where to join....
