rotating toys

I never thought I had the storage space to rotate toys before, but just had the idea of using some shelves in the garage. So, how do you make this work? I can see how it would work with bigger sets of things. I'm planning on Duplos being one bin, and wooden trains sets being another, but what do you do with smaller things or things that don't entirely go together. For example we have two larger Little People sets, a farm and a castle. But then there is also a school bus that I don't know what to do with, maybe it could just go with the farm if it fits. And what about all the little things, like slinky's and yo yo's and little junky McDonald's toys they don't want to get rid of?
Also, do you have some things out in your house and then switch them, or do you keep everything put up and get things out as your children ask for them?

I just put stuff that doesn't go together in a bin and rotate it like I do any other set. Everything with tiny pieces is up high and they have to ask to get it down. Other than that I only keep as many bins accessible as fit in our cube shelves. The rest are in rubbermaid tubs in the garage.

I've tried all kinds of stuff,but so far multiple bins have helped the most. Small bins for cars,medium for puzzles,large for legos and duplos. As long as everything has a proper lid and there is a piece of furniture to put them away,they seem to get rotated in a natural way.

As for true "completely out of sight" rotation,I put a few large toys that have similar mates (like two of the four dollhouse/barn items) and half of the random,small toys in a Rubbermaid bin. The key is to leave half of similar toys so they won't notice. Half of the ponies. Half of the puppets. And so on. I bring out the bin on a grumpy,rainy day a few weeks later and they are thrilled. Whatever small,junky stuff is ignored gets tossed. Easy. And I gather up the other half of their toys and repeat. I got rid of a third of their stuff this way with hardly a peep of protest.
