Dishwashing detergent
What is your favorite? Why?
We are renting a place with a dishwasher, we haven't had one in 4 years. I care about being environmentally friendly, but I care about it working (in a not top of the line machine) more.

Re: Dishwashing detergent
I make our own, and we've used it in a variety of dishwashers. It always works very well. I use the powdered recipe #1 from this site. I don't stress too much about the Citric Acid. If I have it, I use it. If not, I leave it out.

Cascade Platinum is the only thing that works in our hard water.

Re: Dishwashing detergent
We use finish liquid, it was recommended for our Bosch. I have no complaints, it uses a very small amount and washes clean.

Re: Dishwashing detergent
I use Finish all in one tabs. They are amazing. I used natural detergent for years and years until we moved to this area of the country. None of the natural brands work in this water. We plan to install a water softener but until then I need clean dishes.

Re: Dishwashing detergent
We use Cascade tabs. It's the only thing that works here. We have hard water.

Re: Dishwashing detergent
Hard water here, too. Melaleuca is Diamond Brite is what I used for years, but my friend quit selling it. I happened on the Finish All in 1 Gelpacs, and I use the liquid Lemishine rinse aid too and get acceptable results so far.

Re: Dishwashing detergent
If you have hard water, Lemishine is your best friend. The people who lived here before us didn't care apparently, and did not use anything for the hard water. The dishwasher was brown from water deposits. One run of lemi shine and it was sparking white! We also use the Great Value (wal mart brand) detergent. Tried a few brands, none seemed different than the other, so price wins.

Re: Dishwashing detergent
I use Finish tabs or powder. As far as being environmentally friendly, at least I don't have to add Trisodium Phosphate to get them to work like I would with the detergents I used to use, plus all the extra sink washing I'd have to do.
I wish I'd tried Finish tabs before I replaced my dishwasher because maybe it was just weak detergents all along. There 'ya go for environmentally friendly, a bit less in a landfill.

Re: Dishwashing detergent
I thought I posted.
Thank you do much every one. I think my plan is to buy some gelpacs or tab like thing for at first and then once things are less crazy try making my own. I used to make my laundry detergent but then things got crazy.

Re: Dishwashing detergent
I used to believe Cascade was worth the extra money, that it was what worked best.
Then a friend talked me into trying Costco's liquid detergent. I figured it was worth a shot and I could always sell it to her if it didn't work. Tried it out...and all of a sudden, all the cloudy residue we thought was from something in our water was GONE. It works 1000 times better than Cascade, for a fraction of the price.
