Default If you have read Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up

What are the categories she recommends sorting things into for tidying?

I actually put the book on hold at Barnes and Noble to buy today because we are getting our carpets cleaned tomorrow, so I'm packing everything up to go in the garage and I'll put it back when I'm done. I thought it would be best to pack everything up in her categories, but I'm having dh pick the book up on his way home from work so I won't have the categories until after that. Oh, and I already looked in the table of contents in the free preview. Aside from "books" and "clothes" I couldn't find any other of her recommended categories.

Also what if something doesn't "spark joy" but you need it- for example a dresser that is old and looks terrible, but it is the one you have and you need something to keep your clothes in. Does she assume you have enough money to replace everything you own that is no longer in good enough condition to "spark joy"? Or is it good enough that it sparks more joy than the alternative of a pile of clothes on the floor? Or is it enough that it holds your clothes that spark joy even if the dresser itself doesn't?

Inquiring minds want to know!

As near as I can tell from a quick read of amazon reviews, it's the stuff *in* the dresser that "sparks joy", and the dresser is what holds it.

My library system has this book. Perhaps I'll have a read of it and see if it's actually inspiring for those of us who probably won't ever be minimalists.

I thought this said "Do you have the life changing magic of tidying up?" and I thought, I do have that magic!

Decluttering is my superpower. But then I saw that it was a book & I have not read it.

But I put a hold on it from my library.

Because it sounds like a fun read.

I must see if my library has this book! I aspire to be a minimalist (probably will never happen) but, oh how I want a more organized and tidy home. I'm overwhelmed by the clutter in one of our rooms. It's the catch all room. The rest of the house looks ok, but most things without a home gets thrown in there. 😕

Default Re: If you have read Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up

So I have to say I have really loved taking everything OUT of my house and then bringing back in what I want. My yard sale pile is huge, and I have always strived to be a minimalist, so it's not like I had that much stuff in the first place.

So. . . other tips from the book. I really like the philosophy stuff best. For instance, every item that comes into our life serves a purpose. Some things, like some relationships, are meant to be long-term and bless our lives for a long time. Other things, like other relationships, are there to teach us a simple lesson and be on their way, even if the lesson is "that is not my style". So when something is to be discarded, thank it for its role in your life (and try to put your finger on what that role was). I will give an example from my life.

I have some painted white end tables I bought on a fb yard sale website. I liked them in the pictures but when I saw the end tables I didn't like them much, but since I was already there specifically to buy them I bought them anyway, mostly because I would feel embarrassed if I didn't. I learned not to do that again, so I can thank them for that lesson and send them on their way.

Also it's the same way with health products. If you thought something would work but it didn't, then you don't keep it around anymore. I am really feeling that way about some of my natural remedies. Others of them I love and wouldn't part with for anything, but some that I tried and they didn't work I can part with and thank them for the hope they gave me, then send them on their way.

I really like her idea of sorting things into categories and then decluttering. So when you declutter your books, you have to go get your books that you keep on your night stand, the ones from the living room, the ones that you keep in the office, the cookbooks out of your kitchen, etc, and then declutter all the books.

I *was* really excited about this book . . .

But now I fear I just dont have enough clutter to play. But I want to. . .

Like this task is already done. All books are in their appropriate shelves. There are none out of place. Except the one I am reading. Which is on my desk.

eta: I am down to #19 for my hold status.

I called my library. Our system is small, they have one copy in print at another branch in our system. I was able to get it for pick up tomorrow at my local library. I'm curious to see what is in it that could help me.
