Ganglion cysts
What is it and how seriously do I need to take the dr's advice to see an orthopedist in two weeks?
This is for my 13yo dd. it is in her arm, close to her wrist. Walk-in doc said no use for two weeks. Ice 3x a day.

Re: Ganglion cysts
No idea. But no use for two weeks would be rough.

Re: Ganglion cysts
It does depend on how bad it is - but mine are caused by repetitive motion. Stopping the motion that induced it has always been enough to let it go away - from what I've learned, they reoccur with or without surgery

Re: Ganglion cysts
My dh had one on collage on his wrists. He was told that eventually it would rupture and go away. It did and he hasn't ever had it happen again. I allways thought that it was odd advice from the dr.
I hope the two weeks rest helps.

Re: Ganglion cysts
I had one after my first child was born. My dr drained it, I don't remember why. Anyway, it came back and I was told it would eventually go away, but could come back. . It did, go away, but I've never had problems with it coming back.

Re: Ganglion cysts
Yeah, two weeks rest is going to be veeerrrrryyyyyy difficult for this young lady.
It is not very big. I'm planning to make some anti-inflammatory lotion today that she can rub into the area, as well as having her ice. They don't want it splinted because of the loss of muscle that can cause. They are also afraid she will try to do something she shouldn't with the splint on and make things worse. ---------- Post added at 08:08 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:07 AM ---------- How long did you have to stop the motion? We suspect it originated with splitting wood. Then irritated when she and I were messing around. It is very tender.

Re: Ganglion cysts
My husband had one on his wrist. He had it drained at the doctor's once, slammed a heavy book on it a couple of times (a home remedy to rupture it, but I guess you're not really supposed to do this), and it would always come back. The last time it came back, he did nothing. And it just faded away and hasn't come back for years.

Re: Ganglion cysts
It could be pressing on, or underneath a tendon or something similar, making it tender.

Re: Ganglion cysts
I have one and have been to my doctor about it. He recommended trying a topical anti inflammatory ointment first. I was told they could drain it, but it would likely come back so the best bet was to wait for it to go away on its own unless it began to interfere with my life. The anti inflammatory cream has been working great for me so far, so I'm just waiting it out.
It all depends on the location of it though and whether or not it's pressing on any nerves or tendons. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Re: Ganglion cysts
She iced it daily for about 5 days. Now she is using some lotion with anti inflammatory properties. It is much better and I don't think we will need to seek further care.

Re: Ganglion cysts
My husband had one on the top of his shoulder that was surgically removed (they did pathology on it to make sure that was all it was). It was pulling his right shoulder out of alignment and causing the tendons and ligaments to wear away from abnormal pressure/alignment, so we had to do something (he is a carpenter, and he needs his right shoulder to work). The surgery went well and it hasn't returned. He had the growth for 6+ years before removal.
