Re: Keeping cats indoors
We have 3 cats. Two live in the barn. We've had them since they were tiny kittens. They were dumped at our church during VBS a few years ago. DH is allergic so they have to live there. Our house at is a Siamese and apparently DH isn't allergic to him, though too much time face to face can make his eyes water. We got him from our neighbor after his sever brain injury last year. He had a neck brace and a walker...not a good combo when you have a cat that likes to walk.right.in.front.of.you.
Jax likes to sneak out but rarely stay a long. Especially in inclement weather. Once he was out while DH was with the dogs and DH forgot him and went inside. Jax stood at door and summoned him rather loudly. |

Re: Keeping cats indoors
We have three cats. They all pace at the doors crying, and I feel so bad. I have been looking at outdoor catios wondering if it would be just enough outdoors to help them?
My neighbor thinks we should do leashes... but 3 cats on leashes sounds complicated. I am going to look more into options to keep them active inside. They do play a lot (well, two are only 8 months old) and my kids do play with them too. I wish they wouldn't bolt for open doors - so hard to encourage my kids to spend time outdoors when I have to constantly be yelling "don't let the cat out!!" (Our doors in our new house are a bit difficult to open and close so they tend to leave them open when running outside.)

Re: Keeping cats indoors
Oof - two 8 month-olds I truly adore cats, but cat adolescence is one of my least favorite stages ever: I usually find myself counting down the days until they turn 3 and round the corner into "active but not bananas"
It really did help my cats when we lived in our apartment Not just because they got the sights and the smells and the sunshine, but also because the openings of their enclosure were large enough to allow bugs inside and they loooved hunting bugs. I started putting them outside at dawn and dusk - right after mealtimes - and one morning my girl Miko must have caught at least ten moths. It was the proudest moment of her life Now my cats were 8 years old at that point, but they really were more settled and happy during those times they were inside.

Our cats do stay outside all night pretty often. It's their favorite hunting time and I need them to hunt pocket gophers, which are nocturnal. |
