"Different" birthday cake?
Lol that's what my dad asked for this year. One year he wanted carrot cake so I made carrot cake, which was good, but come to find out,it was actually spice cake he REALLY liked so I made that the next year. I was going to make spice cake this year with caramel icing..he said it would be fine but also mentioned wanting something "different" any ideas?

Re: "Different" birthday cake?
I've made a banana cake for the last few years for the kids, and it's always the first flavor to get eaten up! I have to go change a diaper, but I can look for the recipe if you're interested. I just use a regular chocolate BC icing on it, but it would be tasty w/ ganache. That might not be different enough though!

Re: "Different" birthday cake?
I have a rum cake for my birthday, and dd5.5 requested it for her birthday this year, too. (She's gf and I made my rum cake gf last year, and it was *by far* the best gf cake we've yet managed to produce in this house .)
Rum cakes are *awesome* . I used to be a chocolate-or-nothing kind of girl, and despite it having not a lick of chocolate, I've been choosing rum cakes for the past four years .

Re: "Different" birthday cake?
I make something called 'dirt cake'. It tastes like cookies and cream ice cream. The 'cookies' part is crushed up oreos and you can put it together in a way that makes it look like potting soil and do a 'fall garden' theme or something. Just let me know if you want the recipe.

Re: "Different" birthday cake?
chocolate éclair cake?
You layer graham crackers with French vanilla pudding mixed with coolwhip or whipped cream. You make it 24 hours in advance and frost it with a very dark chocolate icing. Then when you let it sit the graham crackers get soft. It's super yummy! There are recipes online if you google it.

Re: "Different" birthday cake?
How different is he talking? Because you could do this:
Bake two meat loaves in 8" round cake pans. Drain, cool, and refrigerate for up to 2 days. On his birthday, whip up a large batch of mashed potatoes, using enough liquid to make them fluffy-creamy. Meanwhile, reheat the meat loaves. Fill and frost them with the hot mashed potatoes, just like a cake. Pipe ketchup on top for the words. Serve additional mashed potatoes in scoops as "ice cream," with dark gravy "caramel sauce." For dessert, serve a pound cake sliced and filled with colored frosting as "grilled cheese sandwiches;" you can even brown them briefly in the oven before filling. Serve cut-up papaya "fries" on the side with raspberry coulis "ketchup."
