Mandy, I started my little slider rugs. Do you make an increase on every round? So far I have the 'core' done and one half-way-around with another colour, and was planning to do the increase on the next colour. . It looks like it's shaping up fine but I don't want to *not* increase and then have to tear it all out and try again

I did increase every round. But I was just winging it. Here's a tutorial that said pretty much what I did but with numbered steps. http://www.ehow.com/how_2093630_croc...val-shape.html

I have old towels, would they make a good rug or will they just fall apart?

I finished! I had taken the pictures and then last night had issues with our internet connection being down. Blergh. I really don't like posting just the pretty after pics with projects because I love seeing the progress pics that reassure me I'm not doing things wrong. So I took pictures of the super ripply rug before washing and then another after blocking to show the magic that is blocking even cotton. The colors are truer in the first two pictures.

Before blocking:

This one had a pretty ripply center and I was almost afraid it wouldn't be helped by any amount of blocking. Even my oldest said, "nice bowl" LOL.

But blocking did help. I just straightened out the edges by pulling out then pushed down smoothing the center to kind of suck it in like a corset.

This is what I consider the "right side" of the stitch which has more texture/definition:

and this is the smoother/flatter wrong side but I still use both sides:

Since I made it and looking at all the pretty colors makes me extremely happy I selfishly put it in front of the kitchen sink where I can sink my toes into the squishy color wonder that is my new rug. Hey I spend a quite a bit doing dishes, may as well make it comfy. The baby still yanks it and parades it up and down the kitchen but that can't be helped for now.

Your Rug is so pretty!!

I wanted to make one out of jeans for the back door so I asked my friend who managed the Local Rescue Mission's thrift store. She brought me 6 pairs of jeans that were going to the bailer for $2! I started making the yarn this morning. (Completely disregarding the advent calendars and rice packs I need to finish for my booth that I'm supposed to fill tomorrow and the hat I'm almost done knitting )

Wow Marielle it's totally gorgeous. :drool You did a great job!

Mandy...how in the world will you do a JEAN rug? It seems so stiff and doesn't it just fray like crazy??

I tore the strips a little smaller than the sheet and I have that HUGE crochet hook. If I weren't mad at knitting right now, I'd use my HUGE knitting needles.

I got some strips wet (didn't want to run it though my washer, I'm pretty sure it would bind it up) and dried them and they came out soft but it was a huge tangle so I didn't do anymore.

I'm planning on washing and drying the rug to fray it after I crochet it.

BUT I cannot CANNOT start another project! I need to finish about 12 before I take on another rug.

marielle, that's gorgeous!

I've decided to make one out of the stacks of dh's old t-shirts. No color wonder here - his shirts are all black, white, or navy. (Welcome to T4 Land) So far, I've been cutting the shirts and now I'm pulling the strips and balling them up - I'm gonna crochet this. But my problem is that I'm getting rugburn on my hands from all this pulling! Is there an easier way?

What do you mean, pulling the strips? Stretching them out?
I can't imagine CUTTING all the shirts up :shock heehee...impatient T3 here. I just yanked and ripped and rolled it up into a big honkin' ball.

It was a method on one of the links Marielle posted - makes realllly long strips from t-shirts. Maybe I'll try ripping and see what happens.

So I started my rug. I don't like the way it feels to crochet it. The strips of cotton sheet aren't flowing easily enough. I might need a bigger hook.

HOJ, how wide are your strips? also, tested crocheted fabric before starting this rug and found that the larger plastic hooks don't have Mich room in the hook. Maybe thinner strips?

Cro, that's definitely a hazard to working with fabric yarn. Do you have a pair of cheap garden gloves? they're thin enough to not affect dexterity (when ripping at least) and will keep the friction away from your hands.

Thanks for the compliments. I don't have much of a design aesthetic so color combos elude me.

Marielle! That is gorgeous!

Okay, I didn't read all of the previous posts (because this is the first time I saw this thread), but I have a really stupid question: What is blocking, and how do you do it?
