carpet cleaning solution for Rug Doctor
We're planning on renting a carpet cleaner this weekend (like a Rug Doctor). All the places that I have called sell the solution you need. I'm wondering if there is a way I can make something- both cheaper and potentially fewer chemicals. Or do we need to use what they sell? They don't provide it for you, so I'm guessing there isn't a rule that we have to use their product. Anyone have any good recipes?

I would think you could use hot water and vinegar but am not sure.

I have used hot water and "oxi-clean" after pretreating with a hot water/"oxi-clean" paste for the tough spots. If you have pets or other smells to clean, I agree with the white vinegar/hot water combo.

Re: carpet cleaning solution for Rug Doctor
i always do oxy and water. to pretreat sprinkle oxy on a stain and then pour vinegar on top -- it will bubble!! then kind of scrub it in.
i also do a plain water rinse after -- so i pretreat, then do one "wash" with oxy in the water, then go over the carpet a second time with just water. and use as hot of water as you can! it is also helpful to mix the oxy with the water first so it dissolves better.

Re: carpet cleaning solution for Rug Doctor
We rented the machine last night. We used half vinegar, half hot water. Looks so much better! And a much cheaper option than the commercial soap!

Re: carpet cleaning solution for Rug Doctor
So glad it worked out and vinegar doesnt leave a soapy residue that attracts more dirt
