compost location
I've started a compost pile back behind my back yard garden, in the corner. It's going well. Except, my husband wants to clear that area (there's ivy and thorns growing along the back) and he wants to move the compost. We have two raised beds in front of where the compost is currently and I didn't know if we could use those. Should I take a side off (or leave them intact? I don't know why most piles have three sides) and mostly empty the beds? We don't use them to grow anything, we've never had success in the back. For whatever reason, I can't get anything to flower back there, much less grow food. In the early summer there were HUGE earthworms in there, but I haven't seen any in a while. Right now the only thing growing is ivy and thorns but that's anywhere in the back. It took this long to compost because it took years to have any sort of order along the back of that yard. So anyway, I'm not sure what compost needs and if it will be fine to move it to the raised bed.

Re: compost location
Sometimes nothing seems to grow with this georgia clay. How much compost do you have? Is it easily moveable until after the corner area is cleared?

Re: compost location
I'm not an expert in composting but I don't see why it matters where it is. I do know that if it gets some sun it will compost faster.
My bin gets the morning sun. It's amazing how fast it composts down in the summer compared to the winter.

Re: compost location
It doesn't matter where it is. You can leave all 4 sides up. I'd leave the dirt there, too, as it's full of soil organisms that speed things up. Stir it all up.
If your soil is mostly clay, mix in some sand when you add finished compost. |

Re: compost location
I don't have clay, our soil is good. Our problems are not very many pollinators and lots of invasive vines.
I went ahead and moved it today, mixing it in with the soil already there as suggested. It's a small pile so far, but I thought it was going really well and moving it confirmed my guess. It looked GREAT and there were lots of good critters in there!
