Couch or Futon or keep sitting on floor?

Do you have a Big Lots? We bought a couch there 10 years ago (I think we paid $599) and it is amazingly comfortable and great to sleep on. Would that price range be a compromise?

We bought a cheap Rooms to Go couch (this one) less than 2 years ago when we moved and had extra rooms to fill and it is falling apart and terribly uncomfortable. I hugely regret it. Going up just a little in price point can really make a difference.

We do have Big Lots! That price range is double what he wants to pay but reasonable to me, so I'll ask him...

And I am having a hard time because he just spent over a thousand dollars to build himself a new computer because his that we bought in 2010 was running too slowly for all the gaming he does, and I just found out the other day that it doesn't even work, although he has assured me he is going to be able to troubleshoot and fix it So I guess part of me is thinking, "Wow, we could've spent that on a couch that both of us would use instead of a computer that I only get on to print once or twice a month..." With that information, I'd go with a good quality very comfortable sofa.

That said, that doesn't necessarily have to be expensive, BUT I wouldn't buy a low quality one to save money.

I know lots of people who have paid top dollar for furniture and ended up with junk. And some people who have snagged fantastic deals and ended up with quality.

I wouldn't too quickly rule out used. Yes, there are those ick factors, but not necessarily. Our best highest quality sofa is one we purchased used from a friend who had upgraded. The saying "they don't build them like they used to" although cliche certainly can be very true lots of times.

Sweet sister. I would tell your dh 'I feel hurt you have spent a large sum of money on yourself, but when I ask to spend money we already have on something for both of us, you refuse. It makes me feel I am not a priority.'

He's lucky. My dh has to deal with my 'we need a new puppy' phases.

Ok, public service announcement: we have three large dogs (a pit bull, a rott and a lab mix) and well....we lost access to the couch. The lab is ancient and the pit bull has seizure, so I caved and let them sleep on it. If you sit on the couch in the lab's spot, he'll sit on you. He sits on the rott's head if she takes his place.

So, get a couch. get a puppy. get a couch and a puppy. But don't get so many puppies they run you off the couch.

Background:

We just moved from renting a house to a small apartment. Our old sectional, which we got for free from my grandparents' house after they passed, didn't fit, so we got rid of it. All of our furniture (bed, dresser, dining room table and chairs) is used or from Wal-mart (bookshelves, computer desk, nightstand) except our mattress, washer, and dryer. I'm ok with that, but honestly, I'd really like to start picking out high quality pieces that don't already have bite marks from the previous owner's dog or drawers that stick/don't pull out or...you catch my drift I try not to be materialistic, but I would like nice, high quality things that will work properly and last. DH would be happy sitting on bean bags the rest of his life.

We need some sort of couch.
Reasons:

1) I watch TV
2) I want to be able to host small group and have friends over
3) When DH snores, I want somewhere to sleep (like, he's snoring now, which is why I'm thinking about this). With his 2 p.m. - midnight shifts and my school hours, one of us slept on the couch at least once or twice a week

I want a comfy couch.
DH wants a futon.
I refuse to get a used couch from a home I don't know-

fleas, bed bugs, and other stuff that's icky (maybe I'm overreacting). I also have zero makeover skills...

We want to buy a house next summer, so I want


Here is my only thoughts. Moving is hard on furniture. It will get dirty, and has a good chance.of being damaged. Plus what if it isn't the right size shape or color for your new digs...

I would buy a cheapish but comfy couch that could get downgraded to rec room furniture, with the absolute guarantee from my Dh that I would get to pick out my dream couch come moving time without so much as a blink or stutter from Dh.

That's a bit of a sticky spot. Especially if you are going to be moving again.

The Ikea sofa/bed combo shown above? We have it. It was originally in DH's office, and used as a spare bed/spot for him to sit and read. Then we turned his office into DD's bedroom. Now that couch/bed combo is in our basement, and gets used as a guest bed. It's actually pretty comfy to sleep on (we've all done it at times), is double bed sized, and my mom actually asked us to make that up for her the last time she visited, instead of the queen sized bed mattress/box spring we have. With some throw pillows, it's comfortable enough for sitting, if you are curl-upper like I am. And it's a cheap cover replacement for a different colour in a different space. (ours is bright orange)

It's a pretty cheap investment of price, for a non-permanent space. And it wasn't hard to assemble (yes, you do have to put it together), AND its an easy piece to keep on hand for an extra guest bed, and its more comfortable than a futon.

Then I would strongly push for a nice couch in the new house.
