Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
I have but I always place wax paper or plastic wrap over the jar before adding the lid. The acidity will eat the metal.

Thanks. That is what I heard so I appreciate the tip. I started saving my GT bottles but I don't have enough yet.

Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
I do. My kombucha isn't actually touching any part of the lid, so
I've got some in the second ferment right now in my new bottles that I linked above. I'm hoping it will help with the fizziness factor.

No, not yet. I'm hoping these new bottles help with the fizz that way.

Ball makes plastic lids that fit their mason jars, too. I love them for all my ferments.

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
I went to get a finished Kombucha from the fridge. My first homemade one and there's a little Scoby on top. It's so cute, but is that normal? I took it off and drank a bit and it tastes good but I didn't think there should be SCOBY on top so I put it to the side for now.

Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
I can't get mine to stop growing little scobies I put the bottles in the fridge, I even filter the kombucha through a tea cloth, and I still have to fish slimy little pancakes out of my cup before drinking

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
Mine does that as well. I do the second ferment leaving them out on the counter and then put in the fridge. I have little scobies on mine. Dh doesn't like the second ferment, and I put his bottles straight in the fridge. No scoby.

Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
For those who are brewing more than one gallon at a time, where are you getting your supplies??
I'm doing a batch of grape juice and apple ginger as my second ferment. I love ginger and it seems to be doing well. I wish DH wasn't so squeamish. I also wish I knew more about the microbiology of it.... I get squicked out still at the idea of ferments, or potentially ruining it. |

Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
I use old pickle jars.. you can get the almost gallon ones at Sam's or check your theaters ...if they sell pickles or jalapenos and get gallons jars there..

Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
DH bought us a round, see through, glass cookie jar from Walmart that holds two gallons as none of our stores sell the larger jars of pickles or anything. If I were making more at a time, I'd just get more of those jars.. it is working very well.
