TMJ - treatment options?
My 14yo dd was just diagnosed with TMJ. I'm researching and would love input.
So far I'm looking into *chiropractic *cranial sacral *tens unit *night guard She sings and is beginning to have pain after a long rehearsal! She has other issues as well but we mostly have those under control. So far her doctor gave her massages and stretches or her neck and jaw to do and she told me to research alternative treatments so we can make a plan of action. We are blessed because her docotr has TMJ and is open to all sorts of treatments.

Re: TMJ - treatment options?
My physiotherapist says she can absolutely treat TMJ, so possibly that.

Re: TMJ - treatment options?
I recently started wearing a night guard. I though it would be big and bulky, but is quite comfortable to wear all night. I haven't been diagnosed with TMJ, but I carry a lot of tension in my neck/shoulder/arm/shoulderblade. I want to start massage therapy to see if that helps.
I know you are asking for help...but I'm wondering if you have links to neck stretches you can share. It's wonderful that you have a doctor who is so helpful with TMJ.

Kiara, I will ask our PT about that. I wonder if its special training or standard. Our chiropractor always gives therapy exercises too so I will ask her as well.

Re: TMJ - treatment options?
Have a look at your library for the book Pain Free by Pete Egoscue. In his Head and Neck chapter he addresses TMJ and gives exercises to fix it. They might be similar to what you've already got, I don't know. It deals a lot with fixing hip alignment, so I would guess that many people wouldn't address that...

Re: TMJ - treatment options?
I found this link with good neck stretches!
https://uhs.berkeley.edu/home/health...eck%20Pain.pdf I'm now looking for shoulder blade because we've learned through PT that shoulder blades have a huge affect on the neck. I will scan and email when I get home (we are traveling)!

My dd also has a bad hip and bad hamstrings and back problems I found a great article that talks about how fixing the entire body is essential to fixing tmj! She's had so many physical therapy issues (injuries)! She also appears to be magnesium deficient which was an interesting connection in an article. From what I'm reading a night splint in her case isn't going to be a good idea. I'm searching for our phys therapy papers FYI. My kids know exercises without looking so I have to find them to scan them

Re: TMJ - treatment options?
I dealt with tmj issues for 6 years. What help dramatically was seeing a physical therapist. I paid out of pocket for it, and things were tight, but after 12 sessions, it was resolved. It was a very holistic approach and I am extremely satisfied with the results. If you go that route, make sure you find someone who specializes in tmj issues.

Re: TMJ - treatment options?
I know nothing about TMJ, but I've read of some adults who had relief when they got their tongue tie corrected. Has she been evaluated for tongue tie/lip tie?

Re: TMJ - treatment options?
Hmmm... Her brother was tongue tied and treated but I may ask the doc or look carefully myself.

Re: TMJ - treatment options?
I was going to suggest magnesium testing and supplementation. If you know she's low, that's a great thing to work on to give her some relief.

Re: TMJ - treatment options?
What type of magnesium are you giving her? Certain types are FAR more likely to cause loose stools than others. Magnesium Glycinate is least likely to make that happen.
If you are using a product like Calm, you can always pull back on the dose until she doesn't have loose stools, and the slowly raise it as her body adjusts.
