Default What do you buy at Costco

I rejoined Costco after a break of several years. I am totally over impulse buys. That was one of several reasons that I didn't renew last time. The impulse buys cancelled out any savings.

So, now I have two lists. Things that we use and are cheaper at Costco. My other list is things that might not be cheaper but it's more convenient to buy a large package or Costco has better quality and it's worth the extra cost. I'm trying to keep the second list short.

I don't have Aldi. so my comparisons are Wal-Mart, Amazon subscribe & save, and my local grocery store. And Azure Standard. Trader Joe's is 90 minutes away. Costco is 60 minutes away.

Cheaper at Costco
Organic butter (regular butter is cheaper at TJ's)
Olive oil
Raw tortillas (these are amazing)
Cheddar cheese
Avocado oil
Avocado mayo
Natural dish liquid
Frozen organic fruit
Frozen organic vegetables
Natural lunch meat (I need to repackage it and freeze in smaller portions)
Zip loc bags
Toilet paper
Paper towels
Hamburger & hot dog buns
Beef hot dogs (they're not nitrate free, though)
Gas & diesel
organic peanut butter
trash bags

More convenient/better quality at Costco
Baking soda (I use it in every load of laundry. I hate buying it in little boxes)
Frozen hamburger patties

I have to double check the prices on Oxi Clean and dishwasher detergent. I just bought Oxi Clean there because it was $5 off so I know that was a deal. Their regular price might not be better thang Wal-Mart, though. I need to check.

I know I found more items that were good deals but I'm not remembering. We don't buy maple syrup, anymore, otherwise that would be on the list.

Default Re: What do you buy at Costco

Kid's UV Skinz swim sets
Stamps (I think they are 1c cheaper there!)
Kid's Carter's clothes when on sale, PJs usually
Kid's sheepskin boots

Batteries when on sale

Air filters when on sale
Tommy Bahamas folding beach chairs

Mini cukes
Sweet peppers
Berries
Asiago bagels
Rotisserie chicken
Rosemary ham slices
Various chips, depending on what's on sale

Kerrygold butter
Fish sticks (the Trident brand ones)
Lily B frozen burritos
Dishwasher tablets, name brand, on sale
Trash bags, Kirkland brand
Generic meds
Honest Co all over wash, on sale
Diapers and Wipes, Kirkland brand

Online - large appliances (best or equal prices as other places, but with free install and "stuff" like cords and all included) and cosmetics and matching clothes for my baby and oldest.

Christmas toys occasionally, but sometimes the prices aren't as good as catching a good sale other places so I definitely check before buying.

I've only ever returned the Kirkland shampoo and conditioner. They are apparently the same as Pureology and my hair did great with it, but the scent was bad and my skin broke out.

Default Re: What do you buy at Costco

On top of your list:
For us, a lot of dairy is cheaper at costco. Milk, yogurt, greek yogurt, cottage cheese, cheese, eggs, sour cream.
Gluten free pasta - the red lentil one.
Gluten free granola bars, my kid who eats g/f likes these, and I haven't been able to beat the price.
gluten free flour
lemon juice, some spices, minced garlic
Some bread products - english muffins, sandwich bread
peanut butter, frozen berries, coffee beans, turkey pepperoni sticks, jam

I was just there today on my way home from work. Costco is on my way to/from work, with a minor detour. But I don't go there super often - maybe once a month, but on the way to work I'll stop by for gas. Our costco also has a great price on wine and spirits, which you don't even have to be a member to use that section (different door).

In addition to what you’ve mentioned already or others have:

Cheaper—
Fresh berries (large package of raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries are significantly cheaper for me at Costco than any other place I can get them)

Bread (depends on what kind you get of course but I can get two loaves of whole
Wheat for same price as one loaf at grocery store)

Cage free organic eggs (I think you have your own chickens though?)

Puma/Adidas zip up jacket and pants sets for 2T-7 (best deal!! $12-14.99)

Laundry detergent (free and clear Kirkland brand)

Yes, we have chickens and I don't buy laundry detergent (I use laundry balls) but other people will appreciate the items in the list, so keep them coming.

In addition to all the foods above,
I bought my vitamix there 5 years ago, it quit working the other day and I returned it for a FULL refund. I used the $411 towards a brand new vitamix (the difference was $80) which is “new and improved” and so amazing (with a 10 year warranty.)

I love their return policy

That's fantastic!

Vitamix has a 7-year warranty so you'd have to do it through the mail but you can get a replacement even if you didn't buy at Costco. Vitamix replaced my container even though I was past the end of my warranty period. Even after I told them that our house sitter put it in the dishwasher. Vitamix is a great company.

So I have to ask--did you save your receipt all that time? Or do they have receipt look-up?

I love the new Wal-Mart app. I don't have to save receipts anymore. I wish every store had that.

They track all of your purchases for the rebate program.

I buy clothing at Costco occasionally, too. I like the Felina tank tops and Maidenform camisoles with a shelf bra, wool socks in the winter, athletic socks, special occasion dresses for girls, swimsuits, kids' playground sandals, boots. It's worth it to me to occasionally browse the middle of the warehouse. (But it's only 5 minutes away!)

It's good to know that, in the US, it's a federal law that a pharmacy must be open to all. You do not have to have a Costco membership to use their pharmacy. And Costco pharmacy is generally the cheapest of brick-and-mortar pharmacies. (Online is usually cheaper but not always possible.)

Also, if you have a Costco gift card, you don't have to have a membership to shop with that gift card. But you can't go over the amount.

I get Dishwasher tabs at Aldi, but when I didn't have a dishwasher, I bought the dish soap from Costco.

Things I buy there regularly:
tortillas
coffee
toilet paper
butter
various cheeses
hummus (cheaper to make it from scratch, but sometimes I'm lazy)
cat food
lemonade, I'm pretty sure it's organic (we don't normally drink juice, but I like to keep a bottle or two (it comes 2 bottles per pack) on hand for if we have company
naan
peanut butter
organic tortilla chips
organic "Doritos" (different brand, I'm not a fan of Doritos but dh and the kids like them, so I tried these, they are SO GOOD!!! Not healthy, but better than Doritos . . . )
laundry detergent
frozen broccoli
whatever produce I want in that quantity when I'm there
I get the frozen chicken breasts for dh (the rest of us are vegetarian)
baking soda
canned tomatoes
Raw sugar
Avocado oil
coconut oil
the little squeeze packets of applesauce when they're on sale
bottled water that I put in the lunches we pack for the homeless each week
