Alternatives to a desk (for me)
I don't have the space to have a desk in my kitchen or main living area. I have a desk in my bedroom which I never use because I'm so rarely in my bedroom.
Any ideas for storing important papers? I only keep papers in the kitchen that are relevant. I'll try to post a picture of what I'm currently using. |

Re: Alternatives to a desk (for me)
What is it you need out of a desk? Do you need a place to file away papers? Do you need a flat area to work on? A memo space?

What about a filing box that you can bring to any table as needed? Something like this: https://www.staples.ca/en/Staples-Le...0_1-CA_1_20001

Re: Alternatives to a desk (for me)
I keep everything in binders which I love. For temporary paper and mail organization I have a file organizer and it has these folders
Look at (Coupons, ads, anything I need to consider) Action (Anything I have to do something about) File (Stuff that I’m done with that needs to go in a binder) Monthly (Bills) Keepsakes (Pics and such that I want to keep) Kids (Mail or paper that belongs to my kids - 2 are adults) |

Re: Alternatives to a desk (for me)
For things I need access to now I use an accordion file. For storage I have a carrying file box. For mail I have a counter basket.
I’ve tried so many things and ideas from online and failed many times. This is the “low key version” for me.

Re: Alternatives to a desk (for me)
Yeah, I've tried things and had them not work, too.
I have weekly recipes and menu plans. I have bills that I need to do something other than pay (make a phone call). I have sports schedules. I have things I've cut or printed out that I need to read and sort to prep for coop. I have a planner that I use sporadically. Right now I have weekly menus and recipes clipped on the side of the fridge. It's working okay. I have a magnetic bin that holds stamps and random small things that I need. Other papers kind of float. This week I'm trying to keep them with my weekly recipes/menu. That way I see them almost daily as I look through the food plan. I also have a canvas bag where I keep MY homeschool books, things I'm still reading through or that I use as a reference in discussions and I don't want the kids losing them or something. I keep my planner in here, too, which means it's not all that convenient. I really want DH to rip out these stupid window seats we have (they're too narrow to be a real window seat) so I can have a desk in the kitchen. |

Re: Alternatives to a desk (for me)
sometimes when I need something done and dh is reluctant, I start the job myself. So, if he is okay with ripping out the window seat but has not started, well then, I would rip it out myself and gently ask him when he thinks he can finish up the job =).

Re: Alternatives to a desk (for me)
So, I think I have an idea. I'm going to go crazy with things on the wall. I have a smallish bulletin board but I'm going to get a bigger one. I'll cover it with fabric so it looks nice. And I'm going to get some wall-mounted wire baskets.
I've been asking DH to make me more shelves since forever. It's not happening but I can hang things myself. I could've been a Shaker. I want everything hung on the wall. I could do the whole thing myself if I didn't have a 2 yo. It's not safe to leave it half done but thanks for the idea. |

Re: Alternatives to a desk (for me)
Nope, haven't heard of that! I only go to Pinterest for recipes and I don't follow design or housekeeping blogs because they make me want to spend money! But I will Google kitchen command center. Thanks for the tip. Glad to know it has a name.

Curious what you settled on? I am looking for new solutions right now, too! And I am loving all I see for kitchen command centers!

Re: Alternatives to a desk (for me)
I bought this in black for the side of the fridge. I already had one that is a little bigger, clear plastic. So I use this new one for holding the week's recipes and any other papers I need for the current week.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I bought this to hold extra desk type supplies. I have it on top of my kitchen cabinets (near the ceiling). I don't like having anything up there but, for now, it's what needs to be. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 And I bought a whole bunch of these. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I already had a small bulletin board/white board so I hung two of these next to it. The kids are each getting one hung next to their bed so they can put their tablet, current books, glasses, etc. in it when they fall asleep. Between 4 cats and a toddler, it's better than using their nightstand. And I'm hanging one in each bathroom to get things off the counter/vanity. I'm going to hang one in the kitchen to get the salt, pepper, garlic, etc. off the kitchen counter. Last edited by Soliloquy; 02-26-2018 at 04:55 PM. |
