our hermit crab passed away
I am so sad I never thought i'd become this attatched to the little things but i'm just so sad that he has passed.
We had 2 in a 10 gallon tank, they were never out at the same time. One would come up and play, and then rebury himself and a few days later the other one would come up and play. But we loved them. Everything they do is so cool. I loved watching them eat and dig and crawl and did you know they LOVE to climb? well we hadn't seen Hermit in a while (DS1 named them both Hermit ) but didn't think much of it because they can bury themselves for a month at a time. Today Hubby went to check the tank and realized that it was flooded. We have NO idea how it happened, but there was a TON of water in there. We were worried. We actually went out and bought them a new crabitat today (because this was a good excuse to do what we've been putting off) and when we moved the tank, we went digging for Hermit. And we found him He had passed away a while ago, we think and was in the late stages of decomposition. Hubby is absolutely heartbroken over it, he doesn't know if he added too much over time, or if one of the kids decided to "help" by adding more water to the tank. So now we have one lonely hermit crab (did you know that land hermit crabs are actually social creatures?) We plan on buying a few more crabs later this week to keep him company (we have a 20gallon LONG tank now which has the same floor space as a 30 gallon but is shorter, good for reptiles and the like) instead of a 10 gallon so we're going to be getting at 2-3 more to keep the surviving Hermit company but we are just so sad that we lost one of our crab babies |

Re: our hermit crab passed away
Alex lost one of his three last week and another today. He's had them for over 2 years! We need to go and get a friend for the one who's still there, too. |

Re: our hermit crab passed away
the kids are okay. Toby's too young to be upset, and Caleb is upset but not too badly. He lectured Daddy about putting too much water in there for them and we told him that accidents just happen. Hubby is so, so upset over it and blames himself
Eta: the water flooded about 1 1/2 inches of the bottom of the tank, under the sand. We couldn't tell that under the sand it was so wet |
