I used that technique for making strips from shirts as well. Works like a charm!

Glad you're protecting your hands!

SOG...I didn't know what it was either. Turns out all it is, is getting your thing wet and shaping it the way you want, and letting it dry. I'm still sort of confounded on how it works. With marielle's rug, it seems like she would have needed to train an elephant to sit on it for three days to get it to flatten out!

Blocking sort of gives the stitches room to even out. If it's a fabric you can launder, throw it in the washing machine.

Pics!!

Here's a comparison shot. One bedsheet ripped up, balled and next to a Tupperware Shape Sorter. And the pile to the side - seams. I THREW THEM OUT *gasp*.

And the rug: this is what the fitted sheet made. I ripped up the flat sheet, and I had just attached the two strips together when I took this picture.

And in the bathroom!

And a close-up: I like how you can see where the sheet was thinner (the holes are bigger) and more cushy (the rug is tighter there). Makes it interesting

Not Stiina, but mine was done in 3 evenings so about 5-6 hours. That was ripping/rolling one sheet (one was already done) and crocheting in front of the TV with dh and toddler around so it wasn't focused time.

Stiina, that looks great!!! I see you have a little left over - any plans for that?

I'm about 1/2 done w/ mine. It goes thru stages of looking like a giant slipper or a bowl. I'm praying that blocking will save it.

Stiina I love it! What size hook did you use and how wide were your strips? The green is very soothing and now I see why your DH was excited. Looks cushy.

You and Mandy are tempting me to try some fabric crocheting too and I have some baby clothes that are outgrown that might make some perfect trivets which we so desperately need.

Blocking definitely works wonders. I just grab the rug from the washer and lay it out on a flat surface. The kids' trampoline inside is perfect LOL. Just hold your palm in the center to anchor the rug and with the other hand tug evenly around the rug to pull it out. Then I square things up by shaping the edges that seem wonky or pulled out too far especially for rectangles and squares. Finally with this last rug the center had a slight cup to it near the start where I added too many stitches to round the curve so I pressed my hands on it to smush it flat. Fibers when wet are definitely more moldable so that's why it's easier to do this wet and then after it dries will hold the shape. I hate to press clothing so I do this with our laundry too. I tumble the clothes for 10 min in the dryer on medium then I hang the clothes on hangers (the ones that go on hangers anyway) and I stretch them vertically, smooth out collars, hems, etc. and they clothes dry beautifully smooth.

sws: You're a hoot! Today I'm actually heading out to give that craigslist lady another lesson. She's loving it but a little unsure of herself at first. But she got the hang of it right away! I expected this older lady who might not be too tech savvy but when I showed up at her house she had ravelry pulled up on her ipad. LOL She's a techy granny.

Awww Abbi, that stinks. Is there something I can clarify in the meantime? I'll admit that I had such a hard time figuring it out the first time especially moving past those first 2 awkward stitches.

Do you need a daylight video maybe just concentrating on the stitch? (meaning do you have your start/core ready and need just clarification on the stitch).

Love the ravelry on the iPad!!! Love the granny!!

Thanks for the compliments girls! I used a 10mm hook and I ripped the strips very unevenly. Heh. Some of them were probably 3/4", most were 1". I had hooked half the rug and decided I would rip the rest of the strips wider, so the second half most of them are closer to 1.25" or maybe more.

Not sure how long it took. I started one evening while toddler was playing (and helping me...), did it during nap time the next day, did it while we had visitors over for a while...and a couple more evenings here and there. Probably the same as Mandy: 5 or 6 hours including ripping.

Cro - the little ball I had left over made two starting cores for the two little slider rugs I'm going to make for DH, to prevent snow and mud from getting on the floor when he brings in firewood. Just step on the boot-sized rugs and "swish swish" across the floor.
