Baked Alaska Question (the plate it goes on)
My dc and I are making baked alaska tonight for dh for his birthday.
The direction say to make it on the oven safe plate. How do I know if my plate is oven safe? They say dishwasher and microwave safe on the bottom. I asked Chef Google but got mixed answers. Some say yes if it says microwave safe. Some say yes if its not too long (won't be). Some say yes as long as its not above 400 (it will be). Some say only if its X material (unknown the material). I thought maybe I could just do it in the round cake pan? Other options? What say ye GCM - I dont want to ruin our fancy dessert! TIA!

Re: Baked Alaska Question (the plate it goes on)
I would probably use a pie plate, or, yeah, round cake pan.

Re: Baked Alaska Question (the plate it goes on)
I'm a little late to the party; I hope it turned out!
When using the oven, I use a wire rack set on a baking sheet, run the cake under the broiler, then transfer to a serving plate. The really fun way is to use a torch to brown the meringue. Put a shot glass of rum in the top of the meringue (make sure to bury the glass in meringue, and pour a little rum down the sides of the cake) and torched that to get a volcano effect. If you sprinkle cinnamon on the flames you will be rewarded with sparks that look like mini fireworks. It's definitely a celebratory cake!

Re: Baked Alaska Question (the plate it goes on)
Glad you liked it!
One other thing - if you do the shot glass thing, brown the meringue BEFORE filling the shot glass. Pour the alcohol into the shot glass and light with a long match or one of those trigger lighters. Make sure to stand back, because you'll have a Mt. Vesuvius moment. You probably want to keep your eyebrows. I don't know what flavor combo you used but it's really good with Cherry Garcia ice cream and chocolate cake.

Re: Baked Alaska Question (the plate it goes on)
We did cherry flavored cake and vanilla ice cream (ds picked it out).
We plan to try another flavor next!
