Just curious, on average, what is the price of a vanilla bean?

That's what they are here in the grocery store - about $5, in a tube. they hide them on the bottom shelf.

I'm so happy for this thread as mine has sat for 6 weeks and it still tastes like vodka so I'm hoping if I give it the 6 months minimum we'll be good. Too bad I threw out the stuff I made in glycerin, maybe if I had given it more time...

Here's where I got my beans from. Since I haven't had success (bad recipes and timing I think) I'm not sure if they are great but they are organic and they were cheaper than my frontier co-op! http://www.organic-vanilla.com/servlet/StoreFront

So, I've been reading up on all things vanilla lately as my mom would like some for Christmas (she starts giving me her wish list in September, sigh). Anyway, I found what looks like an AWESOME spice shop online that give you lots of info on the vanilla beans and such. Click on Shop for Spices and scroll down to the vanilla and vanilla bean sections. The sell the three main kinds of vanilla beans and extracts and explain the differences.

I'm totally trying some of the recipes, too! http://www.thespicehouse.com/ Unfortunately, though, my fifty dollar order would have cost 25 dollars to ship to Canada.

Oh, I forgot to ask my question, too. According to this site, single-strength vanilla is brewed with 100 beans per gallon and double-strength with 200 beans per gallon. So, what proportions are you all using? I checked one of the links someone posted and it worked out to be about 64 beans per gallon (12 per 750 ml).

I had 1.75 L of vodka, used approx 20ish beans (bourbon and tahini). My stuff was getting nice looking a Christmas time, but looks and tastes FABULOUS now. I've not even used 1/4 of my bottle yet.

And I'll give another plug for Blue Savannah vanilla beans.

I agree--longer is better.

I have some that's been brewing almost a year, and it's heavenly.

Also, this last time I bought more expensive vodka, but I think the cheaper stuff took on the vanilla better.

I did cut my beans up. Not as pretty, but supposed to be better flavor.

I cut mine up and I have 2 big jars that are just brewing away.

I have a small jar that I keep refilling from the big jars, and then I add more alcohol to the big jars.

so far, so good... I'm sure at some point I'll have to put more beans in, but wow, they are working awesome so far.
