Follow-up after infection
how important is it? My 3.5 year old (and two others in the family) had an ear/eye/sinus infection. His follow-up is coming up (the baby's follow-up is her 6 month check so we will be there anyway) but his infection is cleared. He has no signs at all of anything lingering. He's been off his antibiotic for four days now. How important is the checkup after?

Re: Follow-up after infection
If you are going to be there anyways, it doesn't hurt. But it's probably just to make sure things actually cleared up and you finished the antibiotics as directed. Since you did I wouldn't make it a high priority personally

Re: Follow-up after infection
I have never done follow-up for ear infection. If it gets bad again, I'd go in again. And if you don't schedule for the older child but happen to have him in there anyway along for the ride with l'il sis, perhaps the doctor will take a look without a specific appointment. But even if not, I do not think you need the appointment. You figured out he had the infection the first time- you will figure it out if it comes back.

Re: Follow-up after infection
Thanks! That's what I was thinking, I really didn't want to go back to the office and wait just to have her look in his ear and say "yep he's better! Bye!"

Re: Follow-up after infection
Yeah, or pay a co-pay for that and have the Dr. charge your insurance $140 for a 60 second check? That's what gets me!

Re: Follow-up after infection
They are mostly checking to make sure everything is clear. It is possible for the infection to clear, but fluid may remain for awhile yet. If the fluid doesn't clear after a couple months it can cause hearing problems. Ds1 had fluid in his ears pretty much continuously from last October until a week ago. It finally cleared and his hearing returned to normal, but it was a problem for awhile. His last infection was in March

Re: Follow-up after infection
I agree tht if going to go for the baby 6 month would ask ped to take a quick look if he is friendly that way

Re: Follow-up after infection
I wouldn't take him for a follow-up in that case. I am curious, even if there is fluid in the eyes that remains, do they *do* anything about it?

Re: Follow-up after infection
If the fluid is in both ears and affecting hearing and doesn't improve in three months, then they would consider putting tubes to prevent speech problems. If the fluid is only in one ear and affecting hearing and remains for four months, then they would consider tubes as well. Ds1 cleared, finally, after chiropractic care, but we were days from getting tubes for him.
It is just something to be aware of. We had never had any issues, and I always thought the follow ups were annoying myself. If you are going anyway and they would be willing to just do a quick peek, then that is what I would do.
