So, I want to try combining a sunscreen recipe with this recipe, as chlorine pools can be nasty and really swimming is the only time we would be consistently in need of a sunblock due to duration and intensity of exposure : http://wellnessmama.com/10658/minimi...rine-exposure/

I would be interested to know if you make it with the vitamin C. It seems like it would be pretty irritating to the skin.

I dunno. A lot of parents in the biomed community seem to do vitamin c lotions and/or sprays because of the effect chlorine has, and I have never come across them mentioning it as irritating.

Vitamin C lotions and serums are excellent for after-sun care, as well. I imagine the vitamin C is pH buffered. It wouldn't be like rubbing straight ascorbic acid on your skin.

Here is a nice one:

½ oz. beeswax

2 oz shea butter

2 oz. coconut oil

2 T zinc oxide powder

In a pint-sized mason jar (lid on), melt beeswax first, then reduce temperature and melt shea butter and coconut oil in the jar. Let these oils cool a bit on the counter (half-hour or so), and then add zinc oxide powder and blend with an immersion blender. Refrigerate until it comes down to temperature. I do that step to try to keep the zinc oxide from settling at the bottom. Transfer to a plastic tub if desired. (I don't take glass containers to the beach.)

(I always make lotions, balms, etc. in a mason jar. If you don't have one, you can use the double-boiler method. The mason jar is just so simple though.)

Is there anything u can use instead of beeswax as a vegan I don't use anything derived from an animal. Thanks for any info anyone can give. I want to make my own because my oldest is sensitive to everything!!!

You could probably use a petroleum-based wax, I would imagine, but I personally would have more qualms about pwtroleum-based than locally-sourced beeswax from responsible beekeepers, from an environmental aspect and its effect on the ecosystem at large. But then, I'm all about responsible stewardship, not veganism. So. Dunno what to tell you. :/

The good news is that bees are not harmed in any way during the harvesting of their surplus honey and wax.

But if you prefer vegetable wax, try candelilla wax:

I was wondering if caranuba wax would work but don't know. Thanks. I don't know any bee keepers here and don't know how they treat there bees so I won't get wax from them for that reason.

Mountain Rose Herbs sells an emulsifying wax. It's not considered to be a natural product because of the processing it goes through.

I also see they have a carnauba wax. I've never used that before.

https://www.mountainroseherbs.com/ca...redients/waxes

Oh, and it says right on the website that the carnauba wax is a great vegan alternative to the beeswax.

You're welcome - oh carnauba wax is another good option. In this recipe you're just looking for something to add hardness so that the final product is a salve consistency instead of runny. You don't need emulsion because there's no water phase; all the ingredients are fats.

OK, so I'm not loving the sunscreen.

I know that it's not advertised to be waterproof. But I figure it should be somewhat water resistant because it's so greasy.

The other day, I put it on and went into the pool. But the pool was so hot that I only stayed in for about 5 minutes. I air-dried (no towel.) Then I went upstairs to change into dry clothes and took a bike ride. I burned. (not real bad, but still, not good!) This was in Miami.

Yesterday we used it before we played golf. We started to get pink, so I applied some store-bought natural sunscreen. Once we were done and we went to lunch, we noticed that we weren't pink anymore. I decided we were probably pink because we were so hot. This was in Orlando.

I also wonder if my sunscreen is "compromised." What I mean is that the first day we used it, we were at the beach. It was hot, of course. And my sunscreen that was once white turned a bit yellow after that day. And I wonder if that changed it somehow. And I also wonder if all of the zinc-oxide sank out of the oils and is no longer mixed in very well.

I wouldn't expect it to be water resistant. I haven't found any of the natural sunscreens to be water resistant on 2 of my kids. (But they can be on my other 2, for some reason.)
