best tests for food allergies?
i am going to be taking my almost 1 year old in to the dr soon, and want to be able to request the best allergy tests out there, but since there are a few different types i am curious as to what you have found the most accurate

Re: best tests for food allergies?
From my experience and reading, testing under the age of 5 is going to produce results that are worthless to you. I would not bother testing a baby at all. At that age, you are going to have to rely on an elimination diet and a food journal and figure it out. It can be done. I subjected Kitten to blood tests when she was 1 and 1.5, and neither of those tests was remotely accurate. She's had other tests over the years, and they really are only 75% accurate at best.
I learned later that testing the very young kids just isn't worth it. One test you could look into is a stool test by Enterolab. That does not cover very many foods, but at least it's a non-invasive test. And you order that yourself.

Re: best tests for food allergies?
really? i hadn't heard that before. it is just so hard because they can't talk and tell me if it hurts or what hurts or if it is what they ate or teething pain, or if they are just grumpy !

Re: best tests for food allergies?
I've heard that it isn't effective for young children, but upon looking into it further they do test and it is helpful for many people. Blood tests are less accurate for everyone than skin tests and either way they don't test everything and sometimes an elimination diet can help rule out things that were missed or things that are an intolerance rather than IgE mediated.

Re: best tests for food allergies?
he cries. a lot. he spits up when a bad food comes in. we know corn and now i think gluten, and quinoa. he also just gets super angry/fussy some days and i don't know if it is because of food or...??
when i ate a whole ton of popcorn one day the next day he had green poops, super spit up, and a really angry few days. so that was obvious. the others i can't tell if he just got a small amount of corn somehow, or maybe was teething, or yes he is for sure reacting to them. i am trying to just keep them out of his diet, but i am realizing the only way to do that is to keep EVERYONE off of it so there is no chance for him getting them(crumbs on the floor anyone?!)

Re: best tests for food allergies?
Corn is so hard. C is allergic and I don't feed him it, but removing trace corn is the hardest.
If it's gut issues, you might consider the IgG test Karen mentioned which your dr won't do and will cost you out of pocket. There are several companies that will do without a Drs order or sometimes you can find a chiro to order one that does. I think Great Plains is a lab that you can do a finger prick at home without a Drs order. Brb with a link to explain the difference between IgG and IgE. Re: best tests for food allergies?
IgG is what I would do but I don't know about accuracy at a young age. I don't know about muscle testing kinesiology at that age, either. |

Re: best tests for food allergies?
Well you can use those test results as a *starting place* for information gathering.

Re: best tests for food allergies?
C had the skin test at about 21 months, and it confirmed all of the allergies I expected, and found a few others. We are glad that we had the testing done early, because we were able to start an oral desensitization program, and her allergist says that it more likely to work with very young children. She was allergic to milk and egg, but is able to eat both now.
