Newborn with prominent sacral dimple... MTHFR?
I just realized that Baby C has a really deep sacral dimple and not quite a mongolian spot from what I can tell, but his lower back around the dimple has a lot of really dark hair.
I'm familiar with MTHFR because both Big J and I have it. But I don't know what to do with a newborn with it. I can't find a formula that doesn't have folic acid in it. Does it matter at this point that he gets a better form of folic acid? What else do I need to be looking out for or doing for him?

Re: Newborn with prominent sacral dimple... MTHFR?
If you work with a specialist for yourself I would call that person and bring him in for an appointment as soon as possible to have him tested. They may make you one really quickly for a newborn suspected of having it.
Are there any advanced newborn screening tests you can order separately that will test for it? I know when I was pg with dd1 I was looking into a test you could order and take to the dr that screened for 52 different diseases- not sure if that was one of them. I wonder if you can get a custom formula like they do for PKU. They do have MTHFR-specific vitamins even for children- not sure about newborns but you could call the company https://www.vitabens.com/

Re: Newborn with prominent sacral dimple... MTHFR?
I wouldn't assume it was MTHFR specifically. We have a number of different midline defects here. I thought for sure we'd find MTHFR mutations but we found exactly zero in everyone checked so far.

I wouldn't do anything without consulting the practitioner you see as well as the baby's pediatrician.

Re: Newborn with prominent sacral dimple... MTHFR?
OK, I know about MTHFR, but I had no idea that a sacral dimple was associated with that. Can you please educate me further? Monkey has a sacral dimple, and this thread was the first time I've heard it named. My midwives and her doctor all said it was "nothing to worry about."

Re: Newborn with prominent sacral dimple... MTHFR?
I have worked for Early Childhood Intervention. Sacral dimples, especially with hair tufts, is a warning sign for neural tube defects. If the whole area has darker hair that isn't so much of a worry, only if the tuft is only in the dimple. It really requires further evaluation by a physician to determine if it is benign or if it is caused by something.
