Default does taffy have gluten?

Margaret's had loose bowels itchy skin stomach aches and a handful behavior wise the past few days all indication of a gluten exposure. We can't think of any obvious exposure I've cooked all our meals at home lately etc...
However over the weekend I took the girls to our indoor Market market just to look around. One booth was selling taffy and other candies and I allowed both girls to create a little goody bag to take home. Margaret chose about 5 pieces of taffy to put in hers and I didn't think much of it. (she also choose a few toostie roll type candies and a few smarties all which I know is safe) However now I'm wondering if the taffy had gluten? I can go back this weekend and see if they have the ingredients just wondered if it was a common ingredient?
It was irresponsible of me to have assumed either way.
I allowed each to choose 2 candies a day since so if so I've been exposing her for the past 3 days.

I avoid gluten so I am curious about this. I know that Smarties in my local stores contain gluten, but it looks like those from the US are gluten-free. Interesting. I always assumed that tootsie rolls have gluten...but they don't.

Here's what I found about salt water taffy. It's likely that the taffy made Margaret feel sick, or that you bought Canadian made Smarties. http://theglutenfreebar.com/gluten-f...y-gluten-free/

It usually has cornstarch but I would not be surprised if wheat were used based on her symptoms.

It's one of those "varies by brand" things. It also could have been cross contaminated.

I though Canadian smarties were like chocolate pieces? Either way I am positive these were safe they are even labeled as so. The taffy though just had the wax paper like wrapper but not indication of company or ingredients. Soo probably not smart for me to allow it as a choice.

Canadian Smarties have chocolate in the middle, then a white candy coating, topped with a colourful coating. They might be the same as what you can buy, but ours definitely have wheat on the label. When I first read your post I immediately thought the Smarties were the problem, but then I did a Google search and American Smarties are gluten free. The same with Rice Krispie cereal. Ours has gluten, but I think yours is gluten free.

There is no chocolate at all in us smarties its a tart candy. Our rice crispies also contains gluten. We have to use a different brand if we want gluten free. The used to make a gf version but i havent seen it in years.

Twizzlers have gluten from wheat starch, so I'd not be a bit surprised if it was also in the taffy.

Regular Rice Krispies in the US actually have gluten in them. Kellogg's DOES make a GF variety, but it's in a different color box (white, I think?) and it can be hard to find. Cheerios are now GF, though.

Whoops! Cross-posted there.

So they don't even make the GF kind anymore? That's just dumb. Rice cereal should automatically be GF.

Though with rice krispies is barley malt, not wheat, that is the source of gluten. I can eat then since my allergy is to wheat. It's bizarre.

When I used to make taffy with my mom wheat was not an ingredient. However, flour was used to coat surfaces to prevent sticking so there could be some cross contamination even if it isn't listed on the label.

Good point.. We removed any possible offending candy. No accidents the rest of today and she was better behavior wise as well. Im seeing glimpses of my dd back.

Crazy, right?! I looked up Rice Krispies last night because I wanted to see if they still make the GF variety, and the website says, "Each piece is made from a single, toasted grain of rice, which moms know is one of the easiest grains to digest, so it’s gentle on little tummies."

Nope, that's not the SLIGHTEST bit misleading!

Yup. The ingredients are " Rice, sugar, salt, malt flavoring, iron, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), alpha tocopherol acetate (vitamin E), niacinamide, vitamin A palmitate, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), riboflavin (vitamin B2), thiamin hydrochloride (vitamin B1), folic acid, vitamin B12, vitamin D."

It's the malt flavoring. You'd think they could sub that out.

Of course worth mthfr I shouldn't eat them anyways due to the folic acid...

Ok - Taffy - some are, and some are not gluten free. It will depend what is used to keep it from being sticky and also what ingredients (flavors etc) are used while making it. Best to always read labels no matter what.
Tootsie Roll type candies - same deal. Some are, some aren't - always read labels.
Smarties - depends. The American Smarties with a certain code are GF. Those without the code are not in a dedicated facility, therefore NGF. Nestlé's Smarties haven't been in the US except for a short run, or if you're getting them from Canada/UK. I can't recall as the ones we have in Germany are made here, and I tend to boycott Nestlé
