I probably wouldn't start it with a baby who is not eating solids...

Oh my! I never heard of that before! I've been drinking a little all along but have finally started brewing my own so now i have access to a lot more than before and just wasn't surehow much self restraint i needed to be using. So if I've been drinking one glass pet day and seeing no ill effects, is it safe to keep doing that?

It is a very rare complication of drinking kombucha, but considering the risk/benefit trade-offs here, I personally wouldn't risk it with a baby. There isn't a need.
Forgive me from asking, but was he a regular kombucha drinker? Someone to tried it, loved it and jumped in drinking a ton and it backfired? Or was this the first week he's tried it an he was going slow? (And I know it's thirdhand info, IDK is a fine answer )

WPTL- You can use K vinegar the way you would use ACV. I'd drink less than 4 ounces a day at this point. Once Uli is handling solids and more than 20 lbs them move to 4 oz twice a day?

This is fine. The general concern is going from drinking none to tons. My dh is one who had significant detox from booch initially. His body very clearly told him. I give little sips to my babies if they ask.

Kind of a slight tangent, and not saying you do this, but it's baffling to me when people question consuming whole foods and drinks, but have no problem eating garbage. I have had people freak out on me when they see my kids drink kombucha, yet they give their kids koolaid or similar chemically laden foods. Color me befuddled.

As Rene mentioned, the CDC does have info on this, although they're still not sure why it happens - http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/00039742.htm

At recent conferences and symposiums that I've been to, there has been concern about kombucha. A big part of the concern has been the fact that you are populating your gut with sugar-loving bacteria, and that it feeds a candida/sugar craving cycle. The more you drink, the more you are populated with the bacteria, and the more you want... There are many who believe that this is what leads regular kombucha drinkers to behave in an almost addictive nature towards it.

As the CDC info has come out, there have been additional warnings posted on my herbalism boards to further limit kombucha consumption.

So, there isn't a hard-and-fast limit to the number of ounces that a person should drink, but definitely several reasons to exercise caution.

I forgot this, but I remember reading while pregnant, that kombucha can pull heavy metals particularly mercury. I wonder if that plays into the strong reactions some have to it.

Stumbled upon this post and yikes, have never heard of this! I only tried kombucha for the first time about a month and a half ago and enjoyed it, and have had it several times since then.
Is this frightening episode that sometimes happens something that would set in right away after drinking it, or is it a slow build up that could affect someone days or weeks down the road? Rene, do you know how soon it affected your friend's brother after drinking it?
