Re: Wisdom teeth
I have nothing to add but I'm following along because my dd may have to get her wisdom teeth out - there is no room in her mouth and they *may* be causing trouble pushing on other teeth (headaches and otherwise) She has tmj and some bite issues and we won't do braces because of the TMJ. It may be the only option since she has "other things happening."
She's only 15 She goes to the dentist in a month and will discuss it again. He told us about 6 months ago that the teeth might be an issue IRT her headaches and jaw but he wants her jaw healed before we look at it again. Her jaw is much better now and our amazing dentist is the only reason her jaw healed up after a specialist messed her up so I tend to trust him.

Re: Wisdom teeth
I have dry socket. This is awful. I can't wait until it's over. I had no idea how high my risk for dry socket was prior to the surgery. I learned last night while laying in bed in pain and awake. :/ I read about my options at this point and am choosing to wait it out over packing it because apparently that is a temporary fix that prolongs healing. Hoping the worst is almost over. We leave for vacation Sunday. At this point.... I am dreading the need to eat on the trip. Getting kind of tired of the foods I can eat.

Re: Wisdom teeth
For me having a "big mouth" I had no room for wisdom teeth.
all 4 of mine were impacted, and thankfully I was still on my dad's really good insurance when I got them out, so was able to go to the guy who did sedation vs general. I don't recall a minute of the surgery, and was able to eat solid food in days. I'm thrilled I had it done when I was younger (also have TMJ issues). That said, our current dentist (who I love, because he's so no-nonese, but is planning to retire in the next few years), is recommending DH get his out. I was 18, he's 41. I imagine his experience will be a bit less happy than mine. With our current dentist making the recommendation, I'm trusting it, seeing how he operates, so to speak, and is low intervention. |

Re: Wisdom teeth
I have mine but none of them have come through. They don't cause problems, though.

Re: Wisdom teeth
Now I'm just waiting to get hold of my x-rays before scheduling a second opinion They closed unexpectedly early today, not sure why or what happened but they left someone else with an appt in the lurch (it's a one man show) so it must have been a big deal.

Re: Wisdom teeth
Welp, the oral surgeon convinced me they all need to go. She took lots of time, a new x-ray, poked and prodded inside and outside my mouth, and showed me the problems with each tooth and worked through my counterarguments. She said the erupted ones would be highest priority if finances were a concern. I may even be able to use their office since the three impacted ones might be billed through medical vs dental insurance which would cost me MUCH less out of pocket I feel much safer there. They are going to run the codes and numbers by the insurance companies and get back to me with my cost before scheduling. She said if need be I could put the first two off until 2016 (finances) or until I get another infection. The other two could wait longer but she said the sooner the better.
Now to decide if I want to go with just a local anesthetic or do a twilight sleep (cost will be a factor for me). They do not offer laughing gas. They told me the "standard answer" for twilight sleep is pump and dump for 24 hours after but gave me the IV drug names so I could call Dr. Hale's center and get the true lowdown on how long I need to wait to nurse. She said if I do just local, I can bring a ipod and listen to music to distract myself. I don't know what to think- I did fine with three unmedicated births but was not good with the stitches after two of them, even with the local. But maybe if I prepare myself mentally and have a good audiobook and/or music it will be ok? 1 is fully erupted, the rest are impacted, 1 soft tissue, 1 partial bony, 1 full bony.

Re: Wisdom teeth
I would do twilight if you can't get nitrous. I could not have made it with just local. No way.

Re: Wisdom teeth
Mine was just local, but fairly uncomplicated. I think it varies by person...by your pain tolerance and previous dental experience in general, and does the oral surgeon think you are a good candidate for local? I didn't do well with being able to feel the stitches after an episiotomy, but I think the epidural had worn off too much and that area is...well...rather personal and not somewhere I'd ever expected to feel stiches. But I did okay with my wisdom teeth and okay with unmedicated birth in general. By contrast, some of my family members are highly sensitive, and feel a lot more even with maximum amounts of local anesthetic, so local anesthetic would just not be enough ever, but they know that from prior experience.
Is it possible for them to pause the procedure to switch to twilight sleep if local proves to be inadequate?

Re: Wisdom teeth
I had 4 fully impacted that I had let go way too long (11 years, I think). No way I could have done local. Not in any world ever.

Re: Wisdom teeth
I scheduled it for next Wednesday. Had to wait because of family issues (which also kept me too busy for GCM), but that has been resolved and now it really can't wait b/c the infection is coming back. Gonna take abx starting over the weekend if I can't get the inflammation down on my own, and planning to try the local but fast in case I need the IV anesthesia.
Got a meal plan for the week, gonna freeze food for the rest of the fam and make three different kinds of nourishing but very pureed soup for me.

That sounds like a really good plan. Praying it goes smoothly for you.

Re: Wisdom teeth
And they are gone! So far the pain is less than the infection was, but I'm hyperaware of the four sites Keeping the gauze in place for 30+ minutes over the evening was the worst.
They called the day before to tell me they couldn't switch to iv sedation but if i wanted it they would stop the procedure and reschedule- but on the plus side I didn't have to fast. So I managed with just local. She started with the simplest and ended with the bony one. I could NOT have done four of those but one was manageable. They had to remind me to breathe a few times but overall I was ok. It was kinda gross and kinda interesting. I really need to give them an article about breastfeeding and sedation I printed. They are sorely in need of education in that area
