Growing Pains
Lucca, 4, has been having bad leg pains at night. It's common, but not every night. She wakes up crying and is almost inconsolable for several minutes. She will finally calm down enough to take some tylenol, after which she cries for several minutes before being ready to go back to bed. This is like a half hour every time it happens. I massage her legs, try to get her to stretch them, try to get her to stand up and walk a bit (that one never happens), I try to get her to drink water, to breathe. Only on the tail end of it will she breathe deeply through the pain, but usually it's hiccuping, crying, writhing. Is there anything we can do to help? It's terrible

Re: Growing Pains
Think I've read that cal/mag can help with that.

Re: Growing Pains
Magnesium oil in her legs before bed could really help with that.

Re: Growing Pains
My 3 yr old has been getting them too. Our podiatrist showed me how to massage the shins where to tendons are and the calves and stretching the calves. Also, she gave use Fisiocream to use which has arnica and some other naturals in it.

That Fisiocream is even more expensive! Unless there's a US version?

Re: Growing Pains
The best that helped my son was a Bed Buddy (rice sock) heated up and laid along where the leg hurt.

Re: Growing Pains
Mag oil is the most effective but can sting initially. Some people make their own. Also check mag lotion. Maybe on etsy.
Epsom salt baths and or natural calm before bed might help. |

Re: Growing Pains
DS2 dealt with this for years. It was horrible. I'd use massage, stretching, and heat socks on the backs of his knees. Pain relievers were our friends during that time too.
I did see a pattern where they would be worse on the days he was the most active. If we had a park day or play date and he'd been running around like a madman during the day and had been having them more often, I'd give him Tylenol before bed just in case. That helped a ton. I hated medicating him before he needed it because the pain was unpredictable but on the days he was very active and I didn't give it to him, I deeply regretted it in the middle of the night when he was in such pain.

Re: Growing Pains
Bio freeze is probably similar to the Fisiocream and has arnica in it.

Re: Growing Pains
We use plain arnica gel on my older son (9yo) who has always had growing pains. We do it pretty frequently as part of the bedtime routine as a preventive - either on his shins or more recently on his ankles. He says it helps most often and we only need a pea-sized dollop of the gel per leg, so it goes pretty far.

Re: Growing Pains
I'm having the exact same issue with my 4 year old! I think I'm gonna add Epsom salts to her bath at night.
