This is why I am willing to do sourdough. It tastes better and saves money so to me it's worth my time. The other things I have done: pickles, sauerkraut, kombucha, kefir, yogurt I always felt like it was a ton of work and not always very budget friendly and the taste was, frankly, mediocre at best. I made kombucha for such a long time because we love store bought kombucha. I did so many things With second ferments and adding fruits and it was still just not what we liked. Re: Fermentation support thread :D
I've been doing kombucha for 2 years this month, I believe! Store bought doesn't taste good to me at all anymore. It's so weak!
I broke a half gallon jar tonight when I poured hot water into it. So bizarre! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Re: Fermentation support thread :D
My first batch of fruit kavass looks ready this morning. Can't wait to see if it's any good.
I hear conflicting things about whether fruit kvass actually provides any probiotics. I did use unpasteurized honey, so the page I used to follow instructions said it would... It did most definitely ferment and bubble up.

Re: Fermentation support thread :D
Slightly OT question but has anyone ever looked at their cultures and ferments under a microscope? Just wondering if you'd be able to see any of the good bacteria or yeasts.

Re: Fermentation support thread :D
I agree! Someone do it and report back. I have lots of food fermenting but no microscope.

Re: Fermentation support thread :D
Has anyone with a microscope scoped out their culture yet? The closest we have is s magnifying glass. I think I will have my kiddos compare plain cabbage to sauerkraut, flour to saur dough and draw/ describe it in their "science Journals". No bacteria would likely show up with just a magnifying glass but it sounds like a fun project!
