Default S/O curry

so....i've never had curry.

i'd like to try it, but the spice factor is holding me back. we all (myself, DH, poppy, nan) have acid reflux - poppy can have very very little spicy stuff, DH can eat a little more, and if it has meat nan will eat something else. i can eat a little bit spicier, but don't like anything that burns (no hot sauce, etc).

so, that said....any recommendations?

you can start with some mild curries. Mussaman curry is pretty mild. Many (if not most) of the Thai curries have coconut milk in them which helps cut the spicy taste.

I'm not the best person to ask for how to make a "non-spicy" curry (e.g., "hot") because I like spicy/hot.

I recommend finding a recipe by googling "mild curry" and then purposely decreasing just a bit the amount of curry paste or spices called for.

When making Thai curries, I use a shortcut and buy Taste of Thai curry paste already made. It's in the International Food section at my local grocery store--no MSG or artificial ingredients. Coconut milk in the can is what tastes the best in the sauce.

Maybe someone will chime in with a recipe known to be mild.

Have you ever tried Indian food? You could try an Indian restaurant. Several curry dishes there, and they're not all super spicy. And then if you like something, find some recipes.

I really like chicken salad with curry, and I don't consider it spicy- the curry just gives it a little flavor.

However, I love spicy foods, so maybe I'm not the best person to ask.

Do you have an Indian buffet near you? Dishes made for buffets are nearly always milder than dishes specially ordered. They have to appeal to the most people.

Butter chicken is a good mild Indian curry-our girls like to eat it. You can buy a jar of paste and follow the directions or even easier with a jar of simmer sauce where you just add chicken to it. Make a pot of basmati rice and you are set.

Thai green curry is a tasty one too. This can range from mild to hot so you mist make sure it is the mild version you get.
Same thing as before making it either from a paste or a sauce. Add a pot of jasmine rice and you are set with that one.

I had never really had curry before I met my husband and it is my favorite thing now. You don't have to like things spicy to enjoy curry.
