Re: Wet Macular Degeneration when you're only 35?? Update page 2
Wow, I'm sorry but also glad it isn't something potentially life threatening.
I am surprised they can't operate to remove this bone growth. Did they explain why that isn't an option? |

Does he expect the headaches to continue?

Quote:
Will the headaches continue? Probably. The growth is putting a lot of pressure on the inside of my eye. My eye is responding with growing abnormal blood vessels which break and the resulting blood and fluid increases that pressure. The shots to stop/slow the growth of these blood vessels and therefore the breaking and bleeding, could reduce the pressure a little.

I think it would be worthwhile to get a second opinion from either and oncologist or an ophthalmologist who specializes specifically in oncology, especially in light of the headaches you are getting. Did he mention anything to you as far as having you see someone else?

No, he didn't say anything about sending me to see anybody else. My husband asked about getting a second opinion. I don't know what to think. This dr is one of the best in the field of retinal specialists. He travels all over the Midwest seeing patients in various clinics. I could see about getting evaluated at Mayo but that's about the only thing I can think of. All the published research I've read since getting the diagnosis concurs with there being no treatment.

I'd seek a second opinion just in case too. Sounds like you are losing the vision either way in your eye. Surely surgery is s benefit to stop the growth for the purpose of ending pain it causes by growth and blood vessels. It sounds so painful for you

Re: Wet Macular Degeneration when you're only 35?? Update page 2
Maybe, but the surgery would guarantee I would loose most if not all vision in that eye. Maybe at some point, if things don't improve with the shots, not having the eye will be better than seeing things the way they are now. But I'm not sure I want that. I already feel inadequate and incompetent and damaged. There's a lot of reasons I feel that way. This just adds to it.

Re: Wet Macular Degeneration when you're only 35?? Update page 2
It's generally just good practice to get a second opinion on any serious heath issues and on anything involving surgery. I have spend a lot of time and money on second opinions for various things much less serious than what you are dealing with and I have never regretted it. Even if I ended up agreeing with the first doctor it was an informed decision that I could go into with confidence. You are very much worthy of a second opinion and the best health care you can get
I think in some case a serious medical condition will allow you to at least temporarily qualify for medic aid. I don't know all the details but it could be worth looking in to.

Wet Macular Degeneration when you're only 35?? Update page 2
My parents have been very pleased with Christian Healthcare Ministries... While the person was rude, depending on what level you are at you may not need to pay much out of pocket in the end (that is my dad's experience with 2-3 hospitalizations last year and having his gallbladder out).
He is currently paying his bill, but expects to get reimbursed for everything he has paid.

Re: Wet Macular Degeneration when you're only 35?? Update page 2
I'm going for the first shot tomorrow, Thursday. I am starting to be able to see through the blackness in my eye when I'm outside and it's really bright. Everything is still really distorted and not the right distance away but maybe that's a good sign. They said it sounded like perhaps my body is starting to reabsorb some of the blood and fluid from this bleed. It's still kind of annoying because it always looks like something is in my eye and it makes me want to rub it and clear it you know? Anyway. I guess we'll see what the dr has to say tomorrow.
