Re: Let's talk about what car to buy.
I should add that my front bumper is not quite attached all the way, it's on and not falling off but if I pull it from underneath one more time or bump it again, it might be the end of it! I pulled it half off on one of those cement parking stopper things last year and a local auto body shop put it back on for me right after I did it. Then a couple months ago I bumped it on the edge of a ditch at the end of my friend's drive way.
And the back door needs help to go up because I guess the hydraulic arms must be worn out. 1.5 yrs ago we had the compressor and condensor replaced when the AC quit working. We've had some unusually warm days here in SC and the AC is not cooling. Going to have that looked at in March. And there is a big spot of peeling paint on the hood. We could pay about $200 to have the hood repainted but, meh, maybe later. BUT IT IS PAID FOR! And we'd have to get a loan, which we can do but it will lengthen our plan for being debt free (besides the house) in 18 months. ---------- Post added at 02:36 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:47 AM ---------- I like my plan of waiting until the very end of this year. If we give it to dd1 in a year she'd be driving it much less than I do now. She'd drive to school and back and then to work (if she's working then, which she probably will be). I don't want or need a 4wd. If that Honda Pilot is only 4wd then I won't get that. Going to start another thread on pros and cons of new or nearly new.

Re: Let's talk about what car to buy. ETA: SUV vs minivan?
Differences in SUV vs minivan?
I feel like vans have more room for everyone and back storage. The few SUV's I've been in seem to sit 4 very comfortably, but more than that and people have to climb behind seats. I don't think they have the aisle that vans do. (you know, where the 8th seat goes)

Re: Let's talk about what car to buy. ETA: SUV vs minivan?
A few years ago when we were considering van vs suv, our experience was that the only way to match or exceed a van’s space and comfort in the third row is to get a large suv. We got a great deal on a Ford Expedition and I love driving it. We need the 4wd for the travel that we do out west, and our extensive driving in general. To us, the space and comfort in the third row was crucial because of how much traveling we do as a family in the car. I would not go back to a van for our situation personally, but I do miss the much larger cargo space, better gas mileage, and sliding doors of a van.

Re: Let's talk about what car to buy. ETA: SUV vs minivan?
Since I don't live in an area that needs 4WD and wouldn't spend the money on 4WD, I feel a mini-van is a much better deal. You get more room and features for less money.
Now my dh has a RAV4 so while technically an SUV not in the came category size wise as an mini-van. I meant an SUV that was comparable in seating/space to an SUV.

Based on your OP I would not be looking for another car. I'd keep that one until repairs started costing thousands, with an s.
Regular maintenance and replacing worn out parts is so much cheaper than a car payment. Plus, insurance goes up with a newer vehicle because of the replacement value. ---------- Post added at 02:57 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:53 PM ---------- Quote:
Legit SUVs are things like Chevy Suburban, Ford Expedition, etc. They are much larger than a crossover, have a higher clearance, towing capacity, etc. Honda Pilot is a crossover, as an example. I've had all 3. We currently have 2 SUVs and a crossover. It just depends on what you need. |

Re: Let's talk about what car to buy. ETA: SUV vs minivan?
Sounds like I need to stay with a minivan. Down the road maybe a smaller SUV/crossover like the Chevy Equinox my parent's have, but not now.

DD1 will get her license some time this coming summer and I could see us letting her drive herself to school after the first semester. And it makes more sense to give her the van then to go buy a car for her for $4,000 that is 10+ years old.
