Re: Saving avocado seeds
I have no idea but I'm curious how you are going to do it. I remember years ago, in my classroom, that we did something with putting toothpicks in the sides of a pit and put it in a cup of water, with the toothpicks holding it up maybe be halfway in the water? I don't really remember. No soil though. I have no recollection of what happened to the seeds though. Are you planting them outside? How fun, I'd love to have an avocado tree but we don't live in the right climate for it.

Re: Saving avocado seeds
The book Don't Just Throw It, Grow It is great for instructions on how to grow from pits and peelings. It recommends the "sphagnum moss" (basically damp sphagnum moss in a Ziplock bag, with the pit completely surrounded by the moss, tucked in a dark place until germination) method over the suspending in water in a cup method.

Re: Saving avocado seeds
Once we grew one by googling how to. I forget the details but I know it started as a pit held over a bowl of water by toothpicks on the window sill and eventually went to live in a pot of soil on the porch (we were living in the tropics). It was super easy but I have never gotten one to grow since. They all have turned black and rotted.

My MIL has 3 little avocado trees that are a year or two old. I think she intentionally started one with the toothpicks over a cup of water method, and then found the other two growing in her compost pile and potted them. They look like they're still a long way off from actually producing avocados (only about 3 or 4 feet tall), but she's in KY and has to bring them in the garage in the winter, so I'm sure that stunts their growth. I've tried to start so many avocado seeds in a cup of water. I only had 1 ever grow, and it wound up dying when I potted it.

Re: Saving avocado seeds
Put it in some dirt. . You don't have to do anything special. I've got a baby avocado tree in my living room by doing that. Just keep the soil damp while waiting for it to sprout.

Re: Saving avocado seeds
We've tried a couple of times with the cup of water method to no avail. I wonder if they didn't get enough sun?

Re: Saving avocado seeds
Moist dirt works better than the water and toothpick method, IME. They take about 20 years to bear fruit but they're fun to grow, anyway.

Re: Saving avocado seeds
Ok yea I heard about the toothpick and water method but I'm going to go ahead and try that along with just planting in soil and see what happens. Its was pretty hot here in Texas but since its cooling off maybe it'll be better to plant now. Idk lol we'll see what happens!
