Re: How does *your* garden grow? Show and tell!
I've got peas, onions and lettuce ready to harvest. Too bad I'm not in any kind of mood to deal with it right now.
Something keeps trying to get into my strawberry bed. It might be mice.

Re: How does *your* garden grow? Show and tell!
Kiddie pool thing is going well. My tomatoes and squash are so stinkin' happy in there.
However. I netted my blueberries and had to extract a very grateful toad yesterday and this morning, a mockingbird (bane of my existence rarrrgh) got under there anyway and booked it when he saw the door open. HE KNEW. I staked down the nets a bit more. Hopefully the free ride for the mockingbirds is over.

Re: How does *your* garden grow? Show and tell!
Rabbits, mice, chipmunks and birds? Oh my!
I was afraid that birds might be fishing in my garden for seeds, but almost everything has sprouted. The beets are a bit slow. If for some reason the seeds poorly germinated, I still have time to replant. We have beautiful white crowned sparrows in our yard this year. I have never seen them before. The only true pests I have are caterpillars in my apple trees. I need to cut away their nests and spray the trees.

If mice or rabbits and maybe even chipmunks are eating stuff, buy a few plastic/rubber snakes from the dollar store. put them out in your garden in highly visible spots, the mice and bunnies will stay away.
my older neighbor told me this last year after we were having problems and it worked like a charm!!

Re: How does *your* garden grow? Show and tell!
As of this morning, I've harvested over 100 strawberries from our little patch. I'm saving some in the refrigerator for our trip to Texas so I can share with my family. Hoping they'll keep in a cooler in ice between here and there!

Re: How does *your* garden grow? Show and tell!
My mom always told me that ants help the peonies open. Unless they are getting into your house, the ants should be fine.

Ants never hurt mine. I think it must be sweet for them or something.

Re: How does *your* garden grow? Show and tell!
I've heard peonies called ant plants. Mine are swarming with them.
We are doing a "potato box" this year. Anyone heard of that or tried it? I'll post pics eventually.

Re: How does *your* garden grow? Show and tell!
I would like to see your pic. I had some organic yellow potatoes that sprouted in my pantry and I cut them in a few pieces and put them in one part of my garden. I have added dirt a couple of times and will do so again, but I read that potatoes should be grown in winter/spring in my area and I planted them in April and the summer may be too hot for them. I have no idea. The plants are getting big. I guess I will see what happens. How do you know when they are ready to harvest?

Re: How does *your* garden grow? Show and tell!
I'll take some pics tomorrow if the sun comes out (it's been raining for two days). My strawberry bed is FINALLY weeded out and the plants that survived the winter are consequently happy and full of baby fruit. The main bed still needs a bit of work across its various plantings... the watermelon area needs weeded between the hills, the peas and cucumbers that are up need to be trained onto the fence, the onions need weeded, and all the herbs (sage, bee balm, lavender, oregano, english & lemon thyme, and chives) need a heavy haircut. I need to seed in the remaining fence line with peas (taking a chance on a fall crop, since my last years' peas petered out mid-July), and get the rest of the onions in the ground between the pole bean and pumpkin areas. Those last two got seeded a week ago, so I'm really thankful for this cool rainy weather, but definitely crossing my fingers that they'll have time to get going before it gets super hot. At least the pumpkins are now perfectly timed for Halloween! And nothing else really needs to be done besides maintenance weeding until things start being ready for harvest.
Oh... the two potted tomatoes need caging and the chocolate mints need to go into a pot. Poor things are still sitting on my step in their peat transplant pots. Sue me, I've got a newborn coming any day.

Re: How does *your* garden grow? Show and tell!
Potatoes are ready to harvest when the plants are completely dead. IIRC, you only need to have about 5" of plant above ground, so if there's more than that, you can add more dirt.

Re: How does *your* garden grow? Show and tell!
The potatoes will bloom and then die back. You can harvest any time after bloom (new potatoes) to complete die back (more mature ones).
