BUMP - It's Posted! Christianity Today editorial on TTUAC and spanking

Has anyone read it? Thou Shalt Not Abuse.

I tried to find it at the Web site to link to, but wasn't able to track it down. It's a very good read (mentioning the recent TTUAC-related deaths) and talks about William J. Webb's recent book Corporal Punishment in the Bible, which states the Bible doesn't forbid spanking but also doesn't require it. I will quote the final paragraph below:

Some Christian parents will advocate corporal punishment until the peaceable kingdom arrives. But such means should be employed miles short of abuse, without anger, and as an absolute last resort. Given the risks involved - children's bodies are more fragile than an angry adult can fathom - we encourage parents to explore more creative and effective ways to train up our children in the way they should go.

I wish I could find the article online somewhere. There is a great paragraph that talks about an Albert Mohler quote on spanking and states Mohler misses the point when he says "God intends spanking to underline the cause-and-effect relationship of disobedience and punishment" because God's "first and ultimate response to his children is not to treat them violently."

I searched the CT site and did a Google search of the magazine and article title.

I'm usually the "Google Queen" - my mother always says, "Ask Christa, she can find anything online!" - but have not seen this.

IIRC, Christianity Today delays publishing some of their print articles on their website (usually by a month or two). I'm still waiting for one from the November issue, so I'll keep my eyes open for this one.

If nothing else, the article brings some attention to Webb's book. Hopefully curious parents will read it.

It would be nice to see CT give a more in-depth treatment of discipline, corporal punishment and the church. Maybe some letters to the editor are in order.
