gentleness won!!!
Today I had to get my children out the door kind of early for Bashar's appointment with a genetic counselor. I prepared their breakfasts as much as possible prior to waking them up, had clothing/underwear/diapers out for them, juice poured, etc. I gave them time warnings, i.e. in 20 minutes you need to have finished your breakfast because we will be leaving for the doctor. I told Bashar that today he would have to see a doctor who was going to ask mommy some questions. When I was brushing my teeth, the boys went running outside and jumped on their bicycles. One of their friends was sitting on the stair case of his apartment. I thought to myself, oh great, we're in for a fight. I spoke firmly to them, No more bicycles, we are going to a doctor's appointment. They both got off their bikes and followed me! I said to them, hold each other's hands, and they did. I didn't repeat myself.
On the way to the doctor's, I saw a lady carrying her son (I'm guessing) in her arms. He looked like he was around 4 years old. She was getting frustrated with him because when she put him down, he sat down on the ground and refused to continue walking. I heard her shaming her son with her words, telling him that she didn't care what he wanted, that it was time to go. I found myself hanging my head because I can think of times when those same words came out of my mouth. My sons were skipping/jumping along the way to the doctor's. In the hallway, I told Bashar that this appointment was not going to hurt, the doctor would take a look at him and that he may take some blood, but that I was confident that he (Bashar) would be okay because I've seen how brave that he's been when his blood is drawn. I was just amazed by how they listened to me and did what I asked them to do, no threatening, no yelling, and by how calm and in control I felt. I had to share a success story, I never thought that I would have this experience.
