Torah obsevant meal
I am hosting a family that is Messianic that I think is Torah observant for lunch. I know that shell fish, pork and any sort of dairy with beef is out. But is poultry with dairy okay? I am thinking something like chicken burritos with some kind of fruit salad and I don't know what for desert. While I'm pretty sure it's not going to offend them if I goof, I don't want to goof up. I also don't want to serve peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and potato chips either.
I need something fairly easy and cheap as the family it's self is seven people on top of the three of us. It's on a school day, so I really do need it to be fairly simple so I can make it while Ivy do school with Ivy.

Re: Torah obsevant meal
I'd call to ask. Did they actually say they do no meat/milk combos? That's typically a stricter Jewish thing, so not all Messianics do the meat/milk prohibition. If you know that they absolutely do separate the two, then I'd just ask her. Also, if they are strict enough to separate meat and dairy, then you'll need to definitely watch your ingredients for kosher certification. The burritos might still have milk in the tortillas. Usually, whatever kosher certification there is will have a "D" next to the company's kosher logo if there is dairy (or a dairy derivitive) in the food. If the kosher logo has a "P" or the word "parve" (sometimes also spelled "pareve"), then there is neither dairy nor meat (or any derivitive animal products) in that item. If the kosher symbol has no D, no P/parve/pareve, then it still has some sort of kosher meat (or derived from meat) ingredients.
So I'd definitely call them to ask. I'm sure they appreciate the attention to detail.

Re: Torah obsevant meal
Keeping chicken and dairy separate is a rabbinic prohibition, it's not from the Torah. I would still ask them just in case they have a preference.

Re: Torah obsevant meal
Are they kosher or just "biblically kosher "?
Because those two are vastly different and will temper what you can fix or if it's simply better for them to bring their own and have it on paper plates iykwim. |

Re: Torah obsevant meal
They've participated in a few pot luck meals and have eaten what others have brought. They have also eaten out with groups, so I am reasonably certain they are biblically kosher.

Re: Torah obsevant meal
We don't keep rabbinical kosher, and chicken burritos with cheese would be great (err, for my husband; my son and I are dairy-free, but for allergic reasons, not faith-reasons.)
