2016 Garden Planning!!!!
It's March already!
Our garden will be small this year. Peas should go in the ground in 2 weeks but I may skip them this year ir plant them late. The soil needs to be turned and I don't see it getting done very soon. I also need to find a source of very cheap mulch. Last summer it was a record-breaking heat wave and I was pregnant--- weeding didn't happen. Therefore, they all went to seed. I'm thinking I'll do lettuce, dill, tomatoes, and squash. Hopefully the asparagus I started last year did well over the winter. |

Re: 2016 Garden Planning!!!!
I'm planning a very small garden this year in my 4x4 plot. I'm not sure, however, when I will be able to get the soil ready.
I'm thinking a tomato plant, a pepper plant, a cucumber plant or two and some early things like spinach, radishes.

Re: 2016 Garden Planning!!!!
I am in michigan so sadly i have quite a while to go before i can really start anything (usually the end of may) but i am glad to start thinking and watching all of you!
I have two 4 by 8 raised garden beds plus a similar sized garden (not raised) in the middle of the yard... my perrenial foods in there are a blueberry busy, peach tree, rhubarb and chives. I will plant veggies and herbs in the 2 raised beds. Definitely heirloom tomatoes! Love those! Have tk still pick my varieties... definitely zucchini and spaghetti squash. Not sure what else yet... for herbs i will do basil, sage, oregano, parsley, thyme and cilantro. I compost so i should have a decent amount to mix in to my soil.

I'm zone 5. If you're zone 5 you can plant peas in late March if the ground is workable. They don't mind snow.

Re: 2016 Garden Planning!!!!
We were just re-classified as zone 3, in Canada.
I'd like to do some gardening this year. Tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, and get my rhubarb to not be nearly dead. |

Re: 2016 Garden Planning!!!!
I have one garden bed nearly full, planted with a variety of squash, sunflowers and perennial zinnias.
Two other raised beds are cleaned up and ready to go. Some perennial herbs are looking good, and I'm still eating kale from last year's plants. We have rain forecasted for the next week, but I think I will plant some cool weather plants in the next warm spell: Spinach, kale, lettuce, beets, garlic. I want to plant cilantro, thyme and parsley, and maybe replace my oregano with a better tasting variety. I dream of having a two week interval between plantings of some things to have a constant harvest through the summer...but I probably won't realize that dream because I tend to be a fair-weather gardener, and we get a lot of rainy days.

Re: 2016 Garden Planning!!!!
I reached last year's goal (don't kill anything), so I set a new goal for this year (actually get a harvest). Following the advice of a local expert, I had each family member pick 1 vegetable/fruit, 1 flower, and 1 herb to grow. Some people doubled up, so we have fewer than 15 varieties. They are:
Brussels sprouts, blue potatoes, rainbow carrots, strawberries, sugar peas Bleedingheart, daisies, forget-me-nots, nasturtiums Mint, chives, parsley The local planting date is early to late May depending on conditions. I have flats in the kitchen now for the plants that need the earliest start. Our garden is a set of large and small tubs on top of a stack of pallets. The pallets are a slug barrier: they get tired before they reach the top. The soil will be the stuff in bags from Wal-Mart, plus a sack of kelp from the beach. Meanwhile, I've been cutting dead raspberry canes on every dry day (of which there are not many). We really need to pick every ripe berry this year; the cargo barge changed its schedule, so most fruit arrives half spoiled. If we get sunshine and not too much wind at the right times, we could easily get 15 gallons of raspberries out of that patch. We also have blackcurrants, redcurrants, and gooseberries, and I know of a good public blueberry patch that is easy to get to. And of course there are salmonberries.
