I need help filling their bellies
My kids (particularly my 5.5 year old) are going to eat me out of house and home.
I have been trying to have them eat mostly fruit/vegs for snacks but I just can't keep up. I just can't figure out how to affordably keep their stomaches full. They eat a good breakfast, a snack mid-morning, a good lunch, snack mid-afternoon, dinner, evening snack. That's if I can stretch them that long. Kalli can eat an enormous meal and 20 minutes later be complaining of hunger. And they are almost always eating good, nutritious food. I just need help with ideas, please! |

Re: I need help filling their bellies
What about keeping your fridge stocked with homemade hummus for snacks? If you make it yourself, it is super cheap. It sounds like they may need more protein.
ETA: we're having the same problem here. I think my 3 must have the highest metabolism on the face of the earth! |

Re: I need help filling their bellies
I do have hummus...they'll eat it with some stuff, I'll try that.
And yeah, I get that...I have friends who just can't believe how much they eat. My girls are skinny-mini little things and eat and eat and eat. For lunch, Kalli had mac n cheese (ok that's not real nutritious), apricots, carrot, orange pepper, and several slices of eggplant with mozzarella cheese on top. She finished about 12:30 and complained from then until 2 when I let them have a Popsicle and she has since also had a bowl of cherries and some raw almonds. It is 3:40 and she is still complaining she's hungry. |

Re: I need help filling their bellies
Popcorn is one of my favorite snacks. It's cheap and it fills every one up.
All of my kids have growth spurts during the summer. All we do is eat. |

Re: I need help filling their bellies
nut butter sandwiches? the protein plus carbs should help. cheese? yogurt? you could freeze those yogurt tubes for a cold treat.

someone else posted on facebook this morning about popsicles made from smoothies, I think I need to try that. They do like smoothies too, but the frozen fruit can get expensive. |

Re: I need help filling their bellies
yeah, the only thing I can think of is more protein - fruit/veg for snacks would have me crashing and starving within a half hour too. If you can do eggs, cheese, nut butter...anything protein heavy that may help.

Re: I need help filling their bellies
+1 for popcorn, and definitely up the protein.
what about serving sizes? You didn't say how much. A slice of cheese is a nibble, really. 3 slices of cheese, 6 crackers, 3 pickles and 3 slices of pepperoni and a drink - now that's a snack. heck, that's tea time.

oatmeal has always been our standby filler-upper.
when my brothers were going through their teen growing, my mom would feed them oatmeal to keep them from acting like locusts. |

Re: I need help filling their bellies
if you can do cheese, eggs, and peanut butter, the good fats and protein in those should help a lot.

Re: I need help filling their bellies
My kids like hardboiled egg sandwiches. Easy to make (just cook a bunch of eggs and keep them in the fridge) and filling.
I was going to recommend popcorn too.

Re: I need help filling their bellies
tortillas with butter and fruit preserves and a hard boiled egg.
a handful of nuts and a handful of fruit and a glass of milk. some fresh fruit and some yogurt with sprouted grain bread toast. Apples with peanut butter and honey(or maple syrup) for dipping. hummus w/crackers and carrots and a hard boiled egg. corn chips and sour cream. Three meals and three snacks isn't bad. I think if you combined some of those 'nibbles' like a pp said, you'd have a more 'sticky' snack. A snack pretty much needs either protein AND fat OR protein AND carbs to make it satisfying.

Re: I need help filling their bellies
oh yeah...none of them drink milk anymore. They just stopped drinking it and that's fine by me...I don't drink it and kinda don't get the point. But Kalli could probably be coaxed back into drinking it...would that help fill her up more?
