Re: kombucha 101 thread!
This is a friend's. She got her scoby from someone in her town, she used my recipe (from LisaM's at the beginning of this thread) of just black tea, sugar, and water, and it has been on the counter for 4 days. She says this is a black patch and black specks growing everywhere. Those were not there when she got the scoby. Is it normal? I have never seen this on mine before. It doesn't look like the usual yeast strands to me.

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
It doesn't look like the yeast strands that I have either. It does look kind of mold like. Can she leave it for a few more days and see how it changes? Take pictures everyday?

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
Ok, I asked her what was covering it, and I'll get back to you when she responds.
I'm actually wondering if maybe her scoby was dying a bit. She did mention when she got it that it smelled awful and really strong ACV scent; she could smell it from across the room. I wonder if it was too far fermented with no sugar keeping the cultures alive in the tiny amount of liquid it had. Would that make sense? Maybe it didn't have a good balance of bacteria to fight off mold growth.

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
I have read that the scoby can grow mold if it grown in a tea that contains oil. Maybe she is using a tea with oil in it?

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
I am loving mine! Thanks so much for the info in this thread!
I am a little nervous though, I'm going to need to let mine go 10 days or so instead of 7 so hoping that batch isn't going to be ruined! |

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
when that happens to me i pour it into bottles to use in the bathtub, or to use as an astringent for my face, or in a jar for the counter to use for mean marinade. then i just make a new batch and don't have any for drinking
