if it helps any, when mine start out, it looks something like this:

I'd shifted the jar and the new baby bunched up, but it did not separate completely from the mother. All the white there are fizzy bubbles. Mine starts out low fizz and ends up fizzy like a soda, if not a little moreso

I have mine sitting beside my coffeemaker now. I did put it on top of a heating pad with the setting on low. I just draped a green terry towel around it.

scoby's do NOT like electrical stuff. if you had it on the heating pad the whole time that could be what caused it. if not i dunno

Beside the coffee maker is probably not a good idea either. Draping a towel over it if it is in the open, is a great idea. I have seen people make quilted covers for their jars, if they need to be on the counter.

Thanks. I didnt know that. I only put it on top of the heating pad today because it seemed to be brewing so sloooowly. I have always kept it in a dark, cool cabinet with a cotton dishtowel secured with a rubberband. I have rarely checked it maybe 3 times in 10 days. (I wanted to check it more

)

I guess I will put it back in my cabinet. Gah! I have a problem with being patient!

Does anyone know why it is suppose to be in a dim spot? I find I get the best carbonation if it is by the window.

sunlight is antibacterial, if the sun is shining on it it can kill off some of the bacteria. there is one other reason but i can't think of it

Lactobacilli cannot thrive in direct light. Darkness is ideal.

It's can't be in a window, can't be in a cupboard, can't be by the coffeemaker, can't be by sourdough or kefir cultures... now I'm wondering if by the fruit bowl is a bad idea...

i have kept mine in the kitchen in the corner of the counter, but i love having it in my bathroom. i have put it in the closet or under sink cabinet and it does well in both spots-- but the doors are opened frequently on the closet/under sick cab. for airflow

My Kombucha went crazy last night! I forgot to take it off of the heating pad and the mother floated to the top.

I'm back in the game.

I've let it go for like 2 months, and have redone it a few times...and I keep letting mine go too far. I dumped out all my KT, and put fresh sweet tea in with my huge, beautiful mother.

Going to check in 5 days, instead of 5 weeks.
