We could see about 87% of the eclipse. I couldn't figure out how to make my cereal box projector work at first, but I eventually got it.

Re: Path of Totality...
At the last minute, I mustered up some excitement when DD1 looked at the date and said "that means it's the eclipse!" I pulled out an Usborne science book and read aloud about the solar system. I had already seen instructions for making a shoe box viewer. We turned on the tv to see what was happening across the country - we only got 83ish% visibility. Then I went outside to see how the viewer worked. I was impressed to see light in the shape of a crescent so I told everyone to put on shoes and go out for two minutes. We all looked in, keeping our heads low then returned inside. Five minutes tops. Turned the tv back on and watched the national news broadcast totality from South Carolina. I call it a win!!

Re: Path of Totality...
We were outside all morning. 96% here. Kids noticed the concrete wasn't burning their feet anymore.
We used our boxes, but my sister arrived last night with 4 pair of glasses, so we saw that way too. The shadows were the coolest part here. Mom, sister, and I all felt a weird headachy feeling. Anyone else? Her glasses came from library-from space observatory here in the state, so I think legit. Completely black. Couldn't see a thing outside of sun.

Re: Path of Totality...
We took several looks with our solar glasses, including at peak (86%). We poked a hole in a sheet of paper to see the crescent image on the sidewalk. I especially enjoyed all of the crescents in the shadows of our lemon balm plant, where the leaves act as pinhole cameras. It was an enjoyable morning.

Re: Path of Totality...
What is hard to describe it the second by second towards totality. At the end you could literally see the cressant getting smaller and then BAM! it's dark. The sky is an eerie color the shadows are strange. It reminded me of the description CSLewis gave of heaven in The Great Divorce. Not a literal sameness, but the 'things that should be familiar but weren't' feeling. And then the dark is gone in a secoond - you are looking at the moon and the aura and then it was like a light flicked on.

Re: Path of Totality...
It was cool!
One of my favorite things...the crescent-shaped shadows from the leaves on the trees. I hope to see a total eclipse one day.

Re: Path of Totality...
Sadly, it was too cloudy to actually see the sun (and of course now that it's over we have blue sky coming through ) but it was cool to see it get dark and see our solar lights come on and hear crickets chirping in the middle of the day. One of my girls got kind of freaked out when it actually got dark, but she got into it when she saw her siblings get excited.

Re: Path of Totality...
My dd and mom and friend and I all got small headaches! Why?
We were in 95-98%. Did it get completely dark in the path of totality? My neighbors said it dropped 16 degrees here at max eclipse. That was so cool.

Re: Path of Totality...
My sdd is in the path or totality. She said it is crazy there, in and around Nashville.
We only had about 68%, but the kids loved it and we had an eclipse picnic and they played, and it was very nice. We are in the path of totality for the 2024 eclipse, though. I'm excited about that.

Re: Path of Totality...
I think we were around 75-80% today and I wish I had had the glasses. But we went outside and the sky got a bit darker blue andbit felt odd and then I went in and felt...I don't know, just off. It was a rough morning with my kids.
Path of maximum totality in 2024!! I will definitely get the glasses |

Re: Path of Totality...
I am so glad someone else noticed the weird headache! I *never* get headaches that aren't immediately resolved by water.

Re: Path of Totality...
It was so amazing! All the "goodnight bugs" as we call them came out and started singing. There was wavy light on the ground, it was moving like water. Leia is 2.5 and she got scared, but everyone else loved it.

Re: Path of Totality...
Was super cool! 90% totality. We could sense it getting darker. It dropped enough temperature to have dew! We had the glasses so checked every 10 minutes or so. One of the coolest things was the crescent shadows through the trees. I took lots of pics.
Dd made a pin hole viewer with a paper bowl. And we had the NASA feed live on the computer all morning. Even ds, who is anti-anything educational, was entranced and watching.

Re: Path of Totality...
Were were outside for several hours, 7-11. We had glasses but also did the two paper plates thing and that was neat, too. We were at 88%. We drove up to about 4,500 ft elevation. It was very chilly in the morning, we all had jackets on. By about 9 we had our jackets off but I put mine back on as maximum approached, it got chilly again. The shadows were fun to look at, so crisp.
I'm curious if my chickens went to bed. It looked like early evening here and that's when they go to bed. I am very thankful I'm not trying to drive home in eclipse traffic. |
