Hand me downs are awesome! My children are entirely clothed by hand me downs and garage sale purchases. They're absolutely and fully appreciated by us.

HOWEVER, I also know that I HAVE to be very careful with what makes it to the drawers. If my kids aren't going to wear and love them, the clothing is going to be wasted just languishing in their over stuffed drawers. That's not doing anyone any favours, not even showing gratitude to the one who gave the clothes.

Things that we won't use or have a plethora of, I pass on to someone else. Or donate so that someone else can buy them at thrift prices. I have to be very vigilant in my assessment of hand me downs as they come in and immediately pass on things that won't get used or loved regularly.

I also pass down almost all of our clothes as the kids outgrow and I do expect that the people I give it to will go through and only keep that which really works for them and pass on the rest. No feelings of ingratitude.

And just when I thought I had all the clothes sorted, dh found a bag that came home from the overnight the girls had with my mom's last week.

*Sigh* it is only 2 outfits each but I had already gotten the bins back up.

Hearing the sigh from here. Hugs.

I really had to cut my MIL off. And my Mom. A teeny bit of it was joy reclaiming for me. I wanted to find a few cute things that I *know* my dd will love. (thrift store finds)

This thread reminds me of when something that happened when I was expecting my 9 year old ds. Shortly after our gender ultrasound, a good friend with 3 little boys asked me if I would like to borrow her baby boy clothes. That sounded great! She showed up with 6 boxes of clothes in the 0-6 month size range. We were beyond set for clothes.

Then close to my due date, a family member with 3 little boys asked me if we wanted to borrow baby clothes. I said no, mentioning that we had 6 boxes from a friend already. Their boy clothes ended up at my house anyway (they sent them with Dh, who I guess didn't realize) also 6 boxes in the 0-6 month size range. (and my end of pg hormones were really unhappy about their "little" offering)

So I had these 12 boxes of clothes piled up in our guest room. One day I set up the neutral clothes leftover from DD and a few new outfits my mom and stepmom bought in the closet. I realized that I had no desire to even open those boxes. (not to mention sorting them later to return) He had probably 1/2 dozen outfits and 1/2 dozen pajamas in each size and it was plenty.

(I was nice/gracious when I returned the clothes to their owners - just explaining that we had plenty and didn't have room to store everything.)

Same here. If drawers are overflowing, or if they haven't worn it in months and it's just taking up space, it's time to make a donation to Good Will.

I also use the drawer space as a limit, and before shopping for new seasonal clothes I will go through drawers with my dk. Just the other day my 11yo ds was sent to clear out his drawers and came back with one shirt. I helped him and we easily collected a laundry hamper full of clothes.
