I'm glad you found something that you didn't need to alter at all!
I was going to say... my parents live in Florida, and this one bedroom gets the full-on afternoon sun and gets sooo hot. My mom made roman curtains with thick thermal-resistant fabric. Kinda like the aluminum foil & cardboard suggestion. Of all the things she tried, it's worked the best.
