Default Tips on working with marshmallow fondant for the first time?

DH wants a Superman cake...seems like it lends itself well to marshmallow fondant if I stick to the logo and red, blue, yellow only.

Any tips you've gleaned that you can pass along before I roll up my sleeves?

Use rubber gloves when mixing in the colors.

Marshmallow fondant is so much fun to work with.

I'm not sure which recipe you are working with, but I highly recommend this one: http://whatscookingamerica.net/PegW/Fondant.htm

Lots and lots of crisco, lots and lots of kneading, lots and lots of powdered sugar. Just keep adding the sugar and crisco and work it...it *will* get nice and smooth and flexible.

Gel colors work the best for tint-ing as they don't add so much moisture and get richer colors (especially important for red).

Push up on the fondant rather than down when forming it around the sides of the cake. Pushing it down will create cracks.

I've never tried it in my Kitchenaid. I always just do it by hand. You really need to get a "feel" for it, to know when to add more crisco/sugar.

If I'm doing a nice cake, I *only* work on it at night when the kids are in bed.

You can make the fondant up ahead of time and it stays fresh in the fridge (well greased with crisco then wrapped in Saran wrap) for a looooong time. Just let it warm back up to room tempurature to start working with it.

So you know what I will be doing tonight.

Do you crumb coat with buttercream before putting the fondant on?

Well...it's done! In exactly an hour I made the buttercream and fondant. And cleaned up!

Now I have to bake the cake.

And can I say that having been sugar free for the past 29 days...I felt like Reynaud on Easter Morning in Chocolat when I tasted it....oh.my.word.
